Kathy, I don't want to be negative either but as a nurse I understand the doctor's hesitancy. You will have better luck with your lungs if you quit smoking. It's as simple as that. My husband smokes and had to have a small fatty cyst removed in a 30 minute surgery. The doctor wouldn't even touch it until he was smoke free for 30 days. My husband is average weight with no health problems. So with all your health problems compounded by your smoking, it's going to be hard for any physician to feel comfortable with doing your surgery. lThey have to intubate you and put you on a respirator during surgery and this will be complicated with the smoker's lungs. Another thing you could try along with quitting smoking is deep breathing exercises. There are pamphlets on this with the cancer society and the lung association. I hope all will advance for you but as a former smoker I can tell you the difference after quitting is amazing. Please please take care of yourself and give yourself this gift. Hugs and prayers. Andrea
