Looks like my new surgeon will be Dr. Mcgrath here in Memphis. had my first appt with her staff but only to get forms that needed to be filled out. I have to attend one month of nutrition classes( my old surgeon did not require that) but once that is over I can have the surgery rescheduled. The informatoin from her office looks very good, and I now have a choice of lap rny or open. her staff felt I was a good candidate for lap, which had never been an option with my previous surgeon. Dr. Mcgrath seems to specialize in lap. SO wish me luck as I head down a new road . According to her staff she has had only 2 fatalities, one 2 days after surgery for a PE which of course could happen from any surgery, and one 2 months after from non surgical related events.

A P.E is a pulmonary embolisim. If Im not mistaken that is when a blot clot forms in the lungs. I could be wrong on that though.

Joe, I am so glad you chose Dr. McGrath for your surgeon. I was over there Wed. and saw her for my 6 week post-op and I also saw Ginger. I know you will be pleased with her and the staff. You know, when they told me I had to go to the nutrition classes I thought that was really lame but I learned a lot about what to expect after surgery and what not to eat and by the time you get through with the classes, you understand the whole process so much better. I have even had to page Ginger a couple of times when I had a problem with food I was not sure how to handle. Anyway, good luck. Rita

Anne, I feel like my 6 weeks post-op went well. She told me I am doing great. I had lost 30 pounds and she told me that was good for me. She had told me that I would probably lose slowly about 1/2 pound a day and that is how it has gone. I sure see a lot of people who has lost a lot more then I have at this point but I am trying to not dwell on the scale if you know what I mean. How have you done? I am glad to hear that you will be at the support meeting. I wan unable to attend the last due to out of town company but I do intend to go to this one. Rita

Joe, When do you start your classes? Her program is so awesome you'll love it. She is an awesome surgeon. I've done really well since surgery and isn't the fact that you can have it done lap awesome. I was back to work in three weeks. I will be there on the 11th of August for my appointment and am going to stay for the support group that night. If you go I'll see you there. Anne

Joe, I believe your first surgeon was Dr. Alston, correct? Did he advise you to find another surgeon or did you do that on your own? Dr. Alston did my surgery over a year ago and I went in for an upper GI about 3 weeks ago and found I have a staple line disruption. His staff tells me that everything is so crazy right now and they haven't had a chance to review my charts but for me not to worry - they will take care of me. I feel like I'm in limbo land wondering how they plan to do that if he's no longer able to do surgery and I obviously have a repair needed that requires more surgery. Any idea how long surgery will take to be scheduled with Dr. McGrath? I keep debating on whether to hold on for Dr. Alston to make an appointment with me or start venturing out on my own. I'm just curious as to what he's telling his other patients or how he's helping them find alternative sources. Thanks... and best wishes to you with your new surgeon. Sounds like Dr. McGrath has some good fans. DeeDee
