Hey Everyone!!
Hi,
Just wanted to send a post. I know I havent' gotten on here since my surgery but I've had a little bit of a rough time.
Firts off, my husband and my best friend Dianna thought they were doing me a big favor by keeping control of my PCA pain button the first night and hitting it every 10 minutes, therefore, I was getting 6mgs of Morphine every hour. Boy was I snockered!! Tuesday morning I told my husband if he hit it one more time it was divorce court. Between the Reglan every 6 hours and the morphine, I was hallucinating on a regular basis. Laura probably thought I was kicking her and her beautiful son out of my room.....never happen...she's the best. I had giants chasing midgets and people falling down in the hallway having seizures and go figure!!!! No one would help me.......
The swallow study was awful. I had to drink some stuff that tasted like soapy crystal light lemonade. ERRRR!!!!! They scared the heck out of me because before they gave me the stuff they said, "oh , you'll drink a couple sips of this then a couple of the barium and you'll be done. I had to drink all 4 oz of the soapy stuff. Then another Radiologist came in and they went with my films into another room and shut the door. I told the tech that it didn't look good.....then he came out and said ok, 1 more drink of the soapy stuff and I need to look at it before I can let you do the barium. Now, I ws crying. Thought I had a leak. He came out and said ok, 1 small sip of barium and that's it. Of course I had to do this all at a 30 degree angle.
When I got back to my room, the doctor popped in and said all was fine and made me start pureed food. About two hours later I had to get up to the chair and promptly threw up and peed everywhere....LOL. The look on my 18 year old daughter's face was priceless. I cried and she cried telling me it was ok she didn't mind cleaning me and my expulsions up. She is the best. That's when Laura came in, about 20 minutes after our peeing and vomiting episode. I wish I had felt better. Her son by the way is the cutest little guy in the world.
Yesterday was my best day, only one episode of dumping syndrome and my primary MD says it's my thyroid medication that's causing all of the dumping syndrome. So beware if you're on thyroid medication. I was doing great until my husband offerred to take me for a ride. He drives like a maniac, and with the reglan still in my system I had to throw up when we got to the store. So I sat in the car while he went in.
I really had thought prior to this surgery that recovery was going to be really easy just listening to all of you. However, for the last few days I have if you'll excuse the expression, felt like **** I know it's only good from here.
Thank you everyone for all of the kind words and encouragement. Thanks to all that called my family. And a special thanks to the greatest angel in the world, Laura.
Anne
PS...I do love my husband......
Anne, I am so glad you are back. I am sorry for the hard time you had post-op. I understand about the morphine and Reglan, I took one hit of that morphine after surgery and promptly threw up so I never took another but was very sick feeling for the first 24 hours. I know it will be all downhill for you from here and will be easier from here on out. Good luck, Rita
Anne I'm sorry you feel morphine did me they same way after surgery before. You are right it's all down hill from now !!! Your a LOSER isn't that grand !! I bet a year ago none of us would like to be called a loser, now we can't wait Take it one day at a time. I will keep you in my prayers.
Best of all things, Linda
Wow, what a story! I'm sorry you had a rough time, but glad to hear you seem to be doing better now. I know what you mean about the stories all sounding like "no biggie"...this is good for me to hear someone having a rougher time...now maybe I'll take some of my friends' up on their offers to help out.

Hey Anne,
They should have taken the button away from me... I dont know how but I pushed the little button 176 times... That was the first day.. woohoo I am so glad that day is over... So anywho I was wondering why some of the doctors put you on a pureed diet right away and some make you do a liquid diet for two weeks...
I am so ready for some real food.. Not like a hamburger or something like that.. but something I could put in my mouth and feel....
Oh anyways... I was wondering how you are feeling... Are you tired? I seem to be tired alot.. I went with the BF to go to the grocery store.. and man it wears me completely out... I had things I wanted to do when I got home but I sat on the couch and watched two movies .. and I still feel sleepy... but I am trying not to take any naps because I will be up at 2 in the morning and I dont want to do that...
Your Hubby was just looking out for you
Well hope you have a blessed day....
Much Love and hugs
Robin
10 days post op...
Hey Robin,
I'm not to sure. When I went to the nutrition classes they said I would be on clear liquids for one day and full liquids for two weeks, then would start the puree diet. When the surgeon came in to see me and I got my first tray it was all pureed and I did question it. She said I was ready for the puree. I know the nursing assistants tried to give me ice chips the first 24 hours and I refused. They thought I was crazy but I told them that I was told by the doctor and the nutritionist that I should take NOTHING by mouth until after the swallow study. So go figure.
What protein shakes are you drining? What's the brand name?
