Hey guys ~

I am a State of TN employee with the United Healthcare option.  Our plan document says it will pay for RNY, DS with BMI>50, VBG, and banding.  My question is if any of you are a state employee as well, but submitted for the sleeve.  I almost feel guilty because I have wonderful insurance with a WLS option, but I want a different one! Or better yet, any State of TN employees out there with the sleeve??

Hi - I'm not a State Employee, but hubby is, and I'm covered under his insurance.   He doesn't have the United Healthcare option, but it doesn't matter.   State of TN is self-insured.   That means that they pay the health care bills, and United or Cigna or who-ever just administers it.

Each year, the State puts out a Paper outlining what will and will not be covered in their health care insurance.   Have you been getting the notices about the changes to the insurance that are coming up at the first of the year.   They *say* that coverage won't change, but I'll believe that when I see it.   The amount of secrecy regarding this whole situation points to it being relatively heinous, if history is the guide.

So, it may add it next year, but for this year, the State of TN has said that it does not cover the sleeve, so it doesn't matter which insurance option you have.   I had the sleeve for a year, as the first step of the DS.   Interestingly enough, even though they don't cover the sleeve by itself, when it was time to go back for the intestinal portion, they didn't want to pay for it!   I'd lost very little weight, but it was enough to get me below their cutoff point for the DS.   I had to get an attorney to help me get it covered.
