Honeymoon in Memphis

Me and my boyfriend is planning to get married in Las Vegas next year and spend our honeymoon in Memphis (since we're both huge rockabilly and soul fan it's the perfect choice for us). We're from Sweden, by the way.
I'm having gastric bypass surgery in about two months and began to think about eating during our trip.
My impression is that southern food cointains lots of fried things, white bread, sweeted tea etc. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not trying to be ignorant.
How easy is it to find great choices of food for me at diners and bbq places in Memphis?

Oh, yeah Southerners do like to bread and fry just about anything and the sweet tea can be used as pancake syrup.  And up until my surgery I loved southern tea and fried foods along with all the other wonderful things I can find here in the south.  Memphis BBQ is a dry rub, so it will be high protein/low carb...just skip the sides.  You will also find a lot of chain restaurants with homogenized tastes...Chili's is the same in Ohio, Colorado, and Tennessee.  I drink my tea with Splenda and steal a bite of my husbands fried foods if I'm so inclined.  However, I find lots of healthy choices and you will, too.

Enjoy your visit to TN.  I, too, love rockabilly and soul yet worry more about the clubs in Memphis and if theyr'e full of cigarette smoke.  That would really bother me, a former smoker.  That is hard to avoid when the air is permeated with smoke, but I can always find good food choices.

You won't have a bit of trouble finding good and good for you food in Memphis. There's way more than BBQ & what I affectionately call 'fried grease' available. Check out restaurant reviews and ask questions on the Memphis forum at tripadvisor.com. Best wishes on your marriage.

Hi!  I live in Memphis and Yes we do serve "little" bit of grease with just about everything.  But there are still many healthly places to eat in Memphis.  If you got to a BBQ place (A&R, Pig & Whistle, etc)  they do serve smoked chicken, etc.   You just have to really look at the menu and see what they offer.  If you are not sure just ask the waiter/waitress and they are more than willing to assist.  If you want to ask me any question feel free to email me anytime.  My email address is [email protected].
