Happy Surgiversary to me

Four years ago today I began the journey of a lifetime. My only regret is that I waited so long to do it.

I went for my 4 year check up on Thursday. As we went over the list of co-morbidities I had at the start of my journey I was thrilled to be able to answer "gone" to each one: diabetes, GERD, sleep apnea, joint pain, stress incontinence, high cholesterol, shortness of breath, heartburn.

I was taking 2000 mg of Diamox for Intracranial Hypertension which has been linked to weight and is sometimes "cured" by weight loss. They don't really know what causes this so they don't know what will cure it either. I do know that I now take only 500 mg of my medication and haven't had a flareup in quite a while. I think I am as excited about this as I am about dumping the 3 diabetes medications I was on.

I have gone from 8 prescription medications to only 2 now. One is the Diamox  - reduced dosage; and the other is an antidepressant. The Diamox has the side effect of kidney stones - oh joy! - haven't had a stone since about a year post op and I was able to pass that on my own.

My PCP was prepared to put me on insulin prior to me getting a date for surgery. He decided to wait and see what the surgery did for the diabetes. When I went back to see him 2 weeks after surgery, he was shocked to learn I had not taken any of the diabetes meds since surgery. My daily BS monitoring and A1c just continued to drop between each visit. My last A1c was 4.9 - normal!!

Even now I can look at pictures of myself pre-op and I am shocked that I really let myself get to that point. Others look at the pictures and tell me they never would have believed that was me.

The journey has not always been easy or fun but it has certainly been worth it.

Maybe next month at the Lunch Bunch we'll raise our water glasses in salutations!

People think they can't do this for one reason or another.  Well you are someone who has been successful yet has been through some really terrible times during the last 4 years.  You are a great role model to people who are thinking about surgery, just had their surgery, and those of us who are a little further out.

Thanks Susan.

Happy Surgiversary, Susie Q!

You have always been (and will always be) an inspiration to me!  You have taught me so much since the first day I met you.  I am so proud to be able to be your friend.
