Unjury protein question

I know this is probably my fault because I read that tastes change after surgery, but......

I tried all of the clear liuid protein (there were only 4) that Dr. Houston allows before I had my surgery.  The only one I could stomach was unjyury....I could mix the unflavored with just about anything and drink it and the strawberry sorbet mixed with Crystal Light lemonade was okay, too.  I even made high-protein sf jello with 2 scoops of unflavored and couldn't even tell it was in there.  So, I ordered a lot of unjury to get me through 7-10 days of clear liquids and chocolate to get me through 7 days of full liquids.

Wall, I had surgery last Monday and they serve unjury at CMC...I cannot stomach the stuff!!!  It is so gross!!!!!!!  I had my husband go buy me some Isopure and I can mix that with eual parts of water and get it down.

I got home last night and made some high-protein sf jello and tried it this morning...well, I can't stomach it either!!  I also tried a strawberry sorbet in CL lemonade and couldn't drink it either.

So, now I'm stuck with a ton of unjury and still don't have anything that I really like!  My choices for clear liuids are:

Unjury unflavored, strawberry or chicken soup
Syntrax Nectar roadside lemonade, fuzzy navel, other
Cytosport protein pure RTD
Isopure Zero Carb

The good news is that Dr. H said I could start full liquids Monday or Tuesday and didn't have to wait until I saw him next Thursday, 7/23.  When I get to full liquids I can have:

Unjury chocolate or vanilla
Syntrax Nectar, Sweets, Lattes or Matrix (choc. truffle, vanilla bean torte, cookies and cream, other?)
EAS Advant Edge Carb Control RTD
EAS Myoplex Carb Control RTD

Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Well, I had the surgery right before you on the same day....my hospital stay was uneventful and I felt fine although a little sore but the minute I got home that all changed.  I am truly miserable.  I cry constantly and I feel sick most of the time.  Not a horrible sick but just an irritating sick and I can not stand protein at all.  I have gone through so many emotions .  When I even think about the stuff I ate in the hospital (the unjury and soup) I almost lose it..It makes me so sick...now I am just getting by minute by minute and trying to get my water in and although many have said not to chew gum it's one of the only things that has kept me sane.  Of course it's sugar free but whether I should have it or not I don't care..I have to have it at this point...

I am so sorry you are having a difficult time!  While I couldn't drink the unjury in the hospital, my husband went out and bought me some Isopure and when I diluted it with water, I drank it fine.  the same with the Cytosport pure protein.

Dr. Houston would've left me come home Thursday except for the severe nausea I had from the demerol pills on Wednesday.  He wanted to kee me until Friday to be sure the nausea was gone - it was!

I came home Friday and am doing great!  I do have a drain due to a hiatal hernia and that is aggravating, but other than that, I'm  great!

I'm drinking - so far I've had 50 ounces today and 33 grams of protein!  I've taken all of my medications so far and I had a bowel movement today!  Dr. H said I needed to shoot for 20-40 grams of protein the first couple of days home...so far, so good!

I've eaten some jello and a couple of popsicles that help with the liquids - have you tried those?

Anyway, I'll pray for you to get better.

I did not have an RNY so I don't want to steer you wrong.  But, Sweets, you are just about a week out.  I wasn't able to do protein right off either.  We have stores of it to help us until we can tolerate it.  Not months worth, but enough not to panic this early in your journey.  Please don't mess around with fluids, though.  Dehydration is a much greater danger right now.  From what I undertand, the first couple of weeks post-op are just plain miserable for most of us no mattter what MAJOR surgery we had.  Yep, I'm including the band as major because it is applied to a major organ.  Do not hesitate to contact Dr. Houston if something really freaks you out.  He is very responsive.  As much as I admire his surgical skills, he also cares about his patients to that same degree.  That's a lot of caring!

ETA:  Just to clarity that I did read that you had an RNY.  I had the DS.  Just because the stomach is not altered with a band, I still include it as a major surgery.  I love the TN forum because of how we support each other as individuals heading towards the same goal of health.  Our journeys may have different "maps"  i.e. RNY, LB, VSG, or DS; the goal remains the thing that ties us together.  We need to help each other over the bumps and we need each other to celebrate getting over the bumps.

Drink whatever you can stomach, but the more you drink, it will eventually
help the nausea go away. Fluid is the most important thing right now.

anbmom...  Do you know about vitalady.com?  She sells samples of just about every protein powder that exists.  I ordered 16; some were keepers and some weren't.  I watch the protein and carb count to make sure it falls into my recommended guidelines.  I made the mistake of buying what seemed to be a 55 gallon drum of something I just could not stomach.  Gotta love GNC.  As long as I had my receipt, they took back the unused portion with no questions asked or hassle in any way.  Buying small at first was a valuable lesson for me in ready to drink as well.  Cookeville only has GNC.  I got some individual drinks at a Vitamin Shoppe.

I ordered some samples from enjoyhealth.com - they had the best price I could find on the syntrax nectar.  I also ordered some sample of the unjury from them and bought some individual samples from The Vitamin Shoppe.

Since Dr. H's office is so strict on what you can have the first couple of weeks, I wanted to have it on hand, so I ordered what tasted best pre-op.

I'm going to send back the unopened containers to unjury - if they'll take them since I threw the packing list away - I've emailed them to inquire about it.

I've found I can drink the Isopure and cytospor****ered down about 1/2 water and so far I've gotten in 33 g of protein today and he said I should shoot for 20-40 when I first got home...so I'm on target!

Like I said before, I can start full liquied Monday or Tuesday per his discharge instructions...so I'm going to try to find some that I can drink that week.

Thanks!

I can't stress enough about the fluids, whether it is water, crystal lite or protein. Drink, drink, drink, the alternative is dehydration and it makes you
very nauseous. Walk and sip.  Sounds like you are doing good.

So, my for the day yesterday I ended up with:

80 ounces of liquids
34 grams of protein

I know the protein needs to be up there....I'm definitely going to try to increase it today.

I think my liqids are pretty good, though.

I feel great....except for the aggravating JP drain...I'll be glad to get it out Thursday!

Thanks for all your answers to my questions....my next quest will be to find some full liquid protein I can drink.
