Hi TN group

I rarely post here but just read today that Kathy Newton is now living at a Tennessee Campground In Lebanon. There was a big write up about a lot of families in the state who have been living in the campgrounds for one reason or another.

Kathy is still in her wheelchair and in a cast and she is still getting the chemo every day for her leukemia. Has anyone been in contact with her? From the way the article is written she is at the Timberline Campground and is living in a tent but she told the reporter she is not homeless.

It cannot be good for her in her condition to be in a tent and in a wheelchair , going through chemo. This can be verified in the Tennessean newspaper and they have an on line videos but I have not looked at those yet.

She is an Ex Navy veteran. Why doesn't the VA help her get housing, what a shame? That's how we treat our veterans.

I don't know who Kathy Newton is...unless I just know her by her screen name.....I think this is horrible.  How can anyone help?

Kathy Newton is a WLS member of this board.  But even more she is a inspirational human being.  Life has not been good to Kathy but you would never her it from her.  Illness, tragedy, no income other then a small social security check yet she never complains.  She is the most resilient person I've known.  I wish I had the resources to make a difference in her life, sad to say I don't can only stand by and watch. Hey Bob,
I think Kathy does get some help from the VA.  My husband & I went to go visit her some time ago and we were talking about it. I do know that she goes to the VA for medical help from the VA doctors and I think she gets a VA check. I know it's not much though.
She's a good person

Sophia,
We are struggling too but we do have enough to share a little. Can you get the address for her at the campground for those who want to donate something? I knew she hadn't been on the board for a while and she was a little angry at me for criticizing Dr. Colquitt but I didn't realize this had happened to her. My heart goes out to her. She is an inspiration to be handling all her issues with such grace.

These are ways to help:

Timberline Campground
1204 Murfreesboro Rd
615-449-2831
Management operates a food pantry to help residents and could always use more donations.

Brooks House
615-444-8882 or www.brookshouse.org.  This agency, which works with homeless women and children, does a lot of outreach with families living in campgrounds, trying to get them in homes or hotels.

Joseph's Storehouse
1960 Tater Peeler Road
Lebanon
615-453-5777
A food pantry operated by a nearby church that helps many campground residents.

Update on Kathy

There was another article in the Tennessean today.

Kathy was given the gift of a new tent on Sunday morning by a donor. She said she wasn't expecting it. She just wanted to get across the point about what the economy is forcing people to do.

A delegation from the Veterans  of Foreign Wars Chapter 5015 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 104 came out to offer her help with her disability benefits and to offer her rides to church and doctor's appointments. One man picked up a gallon of milk when he found out when he found out she had nothing to drink with her chemotherapy medicine.

Richard "Doc" Kroft a Vietnam Veteran said in just one visit they met four or five other veterans.

Other people at the campgrounds were helped with food, offers of jobs, etc.
So there is help.
One unemployed woman brought a whole trunk load of vegetables from her garden to a family with 5 kids , a man who had his own construction company but lost it due to the economy slump.

One paycheck away from being homeless.

Many financial advisers say we all should have at least 6 months of income saved away.
Live under your means.

Kathy newton received the tent from her sister.  She has refused an apartment from the vets.  The wheel chair is a prop much like her vetietnam hat.  She never served in the war.
