Shoot!  I need to eat like 1200 calories a day!

Those are very low calories.  I figured a person should have 100 carbs a day and about 80 grams of protein and about 20 grams of fat.  And of course, 25 grams of fiber.

100 carbs a day would throw RNY patients into a carb coma and possibly reactive hypoglycemia...  way too many...

i have between 100-150 carbs a day, and never had a carb coma.  Now, if I eat like 5 donuts in a row or maybe a whole package of sweet rolls at one time I will fell a bit of nausea but it quickly passes.  I always get in the 25 g of fiber and around 100 g protein.  I can eat a six inch subway sandwich loaded with veggies and that will fill me up for a little while.

GoinCrzyKy,
Went back to read your profile...  I see you had surgery in 2003.. and are awaiting a revision from Dr. Husted.  You are far enough out, and if you continued to raise those carb counts you have more than likely made yourself tolerant to carbs.

Most of the folks currently posting on the board are about a year out, some are brand new or waiting surgery.  They probably won't get the ok from their surgeons to ingest 100 carbs/day.  Dr. Hugh Houston for RNY patients doesn't really encourage over 5/meal.  Now DS and sleeve procedure guidelines are different, I'm sure.  And perhaps the Vanderbilt and Baptist folks will chime in here, but 100 carbs/day for new people is a very bad idea.

It's not a matter of "what I CAN eat" and not get sick.  It's a matter of "what should we eat and still be healthy and not gain weight back."

Only five carbs a meal?  How many meals a day does Dr. Houston want you to eat?

For new RNY postops, he likes you to limit them to about 5/meal, yes... unless those numbers have been changed since my surgery.  We will let some of the new postops weigh in on that ...  however, 100 is way out of a new postop league... what guidelines did your RNY surgeon give you?

Now, I will say that in the beginning, Dr Houston said, "5" and I misunderstood and heard "9" (odd number, I know), so I always tried to limit my meals to approx 10/meal.  3 meals a day.

For someone further out, the limit I try to keep is about 50-60/day.  I know that different surgeons have different guidelines...  but specifically I remember Dr. Houston saying that we would be on a low carb diet for the remainder of our lives...  from the success stories that I have followed, and forums that I have been part of, a low carb lifestyle is among the key factors.

I disagree. My nutritionist set my guidelines for me and gave me a carbs limit of 30 grams per meal, not to exceed 100 grams per day. Things are going well. I have had no problems with sugar issues at all. My nutritionist works with all the patients for my surgeon and his partner and I see many of them at support group meetings. Everyone who is sticking to the plan is doing great. My surgeon's teacm prefers moderation rather than severe restriction.
