Hello everyone,

Ive been a lurker here for about a year now, and just recently got my approval from the insurance company. Ive met all my requirements, and I finally meet my surgeon next month. She will then make my surgery appointement. Can anyone tell me what to expect between then and my surgery date? Someone told me I will need to lose weight before, some told me I needed to do a liquid diet for a month before surgery.

Any tips are greatly appreciated. :)

Your surgeon will be your best source of information.  Of course since you meet with her next month, that seems like a far way off, doesn't it?  Without knowing what surgery you will be having or how (open versus lap) it's hard to answer your questions.

My procedure was done with a laparoscope.  My doctor told me to try to lose some weight.  He wanted my liver to shirink so he'd have more room for the instruments in there.  I did high protein and low carbs and lost about 10 pounds prior to surgery.  My doctor did not require any bowel prep, just liquids only for two days prior to surgery.

Every doctor has his/her own protocol. If you tell us what procedure you're having, you'll probably get more useful repsonses from others who have had the same one with your surgeon.

Best wishes on your journey to health.

MUTTS said it best...ask your Doc!  But this is a good place to also ask questions.  Don't be surprised if you ask 20 questions, that you get 20 different answers!

It seems every surgical center has different, but good advice and rules for us to follow.  Sometimes even different rules within the same surgical center!

But you've arrived at a good place for support!  Ask away!

Welcome!

I'm a Dr. Weaver graduate (lol).  I had a Lap RNY on 2/9 and you can see my ticker to see that it has been a great success so far.

Welcome to the board!

If they are still doing the same thing you will have to go to 2 nutrition classes prior to surgery where they will go over what is required.  We are all encouraged to try to lose as much as possible before surgery.  I lost 25 pounds prior to surgery.  There will be a two or 3 week low cal simi liquid diet prior to surgery to help shrink the liver.  Dr. Weaver will explain the details when you see her.  Her office will give you a handout with what to eat on the diet and I am sure they will give you one early if you ask for it.

Be sure to write down any questions you might have.  She is a very busy lady and you will not see her often.  Just your  1st appointment and of course when you are in the hospital.  The staff will answer any questions  you might have prior to surgery and the support group meetings prior to surgery will help answer questions too.   Call Dr. Weavers office to get the next support group time.

Good luck to you and Congratulations on your approval!  You are on your way.

Congratulations on your approval!  I've been a member of this board off and on for several years now and am hoping this is my last time... meaning I remain a member and finally get my surgery!  =)

I've seen several doctors previously and all had different requirements.  Have you checked Dr. Weaver's website - some of the docs have links to their requirements and what to expect on there.

I wish you the best - this is a fantastic website and a great place for support.  =)
