Am I gonna have a drain?  I really don't want a drain. Anyway I can get out of it?

Does he have to do the IV in the neck? Does it hurt?

I did not have a drain, I had the RNY.  I see you are doing DS so I really don't know.  Maybe JohnH can answer your question.  As for the neck thing, no it did not hurt.  It kinda stung when they pulled it out.

I had a drain, now did I want one NOPE but was it that bad NOPE.   I have been reading posts on OH where people are getting JTUBES and drains and everything else.   The drain was only in until my 1 week follow up and then Dr. Houston took it out.   I thought at the time he did a drain because my BMI was high, but I think Ronda had one and she had a starting BMI of 43.   Hopefully she will chim in when she has a minute.   I talked to her on the phone a little bit ago but she had her hands full with 2 - 5 year olds.   The IV in the neck did not hurt, but did sting a little coming out.

The drain isn't all that bad, really.  Admittedly, it was a nuisance.  However, I've read too many medical records of fluid build up in the abdominal cavity and the complications from that.  I'd rather have the drain than those problems.  The catheter in the neck was also a bit of a blessing.  I received a lot of meds by that cath.  There or shots?  I'll take the catheter.  I knew they were going to put it in there, but I was pretty doped up by the time they did it and don't remember them doing it.  It wasn't bad when they removed it.  I know I did not look in the mirror when I was out of bed.  It's one thing for me to know about it, but I didn't really need to see it.  I don't remember any pain associated with it.

I was not really excited about a drain, but when I saw how much stuff was coming out,I would not want my body to have to absorb all of that. Our body needs to heal and I'm glad I had one. Your pic line may or may not be in your neck, I know I have little veins and I figured I would
have one. They gave me some I DON'T CARE meds and then did it, I
could have cared less.

YOU ARE GOING TO BE FINE!!!!!

I had RNY surgery & Dr. Houston didn't do a drain, nor did I have a central line/IV in the neck.  I had an IV in my arm (no pain, really...pretty simple) & that was it.

Dr. H prescribed me a valium (I think that is what it was) that the nurse gave me when I checked in & got changed & I was pretty mellow....it was easy, breezy....next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery with the nicest nurse telling me that she was going to Dollywood that afternoon & talking about her trip.....

I had no pain for two days & then just general soreness.....I was up walking pretty well by that afternoon....the surgery gas bubbling around in my stomach/chest was really, really freaky, but, aside from that.....went as planned....

I see you are having the DS,congratulations!! Dr. Houston will probably
do a drain tube. K9, John, ME, Izzy2008, and CurvyBarbie all had drains. It is really no big deal to take care of ,you just pin it to your gown or shirt, and go on.

I was nervous , but so glad I did it. I have lost 18 lbs in 20 days, I am thrilled.  A good friend told me to HANG ON IT'S A WILD RIDE.

I love it!!!!!! You will too.

And soon you'll be a little baby...  Just kidding around with you, OK?  You are about to undergo major surgery.  Of course you're nervous.  Dr. Houston is a terrific doctor.  He knows his stuff and he cares a lot about his patients.
