Ladies Question Only Beware
I take Birth Control Pills for "regulating reasons".I have been reading on the boards that surgeons want women who are on B/C to stop taking it a month before surgery because of clotting reasons.IN my case I have not been told this. When I seen my Surgeon back in March I was not on the pill then.I have only been on it for two months.I called the Nurse and she has verified TWICE that this is not true and I need to continue to take the pills for the problems that I am having. My question to any ladies on here is were you on birth control and told to stop or are there any on here that were on Birth Control and was told that there was NO problem to take it on up until surgery? My surgery is July 20th and I am so confused about what and what not to do.If I do not take them then I will be in serious pain if you know what I mean ladies.

I've heard that some women are told to stop taking birth control prior to surgery, but my surgeon did not have me. It might have something to do with being on the pill can increase your chances of blood clots.
I've been on the pill since I was a teenager (now I'm 41) for regulatory reasons, too. I guess it's one of those varies by surgeon thing. My clinic was more concerned about stopping things like anti-inflammatories and any other medications that might make you bleed easier/thins your blood.
I stayed on my bc continuously and did not have any problems. I would say if you have any leg pain after surgery, call your clinic immediately because it could be due to a blood clot.
If you've asked and they said it's okay twice, I'd just keep on keeping on! Perhaps in your case, the risk of clots does not outweigh the pain and problems of your cycles.

Like Denise said, it is to prevent blood clots. I'm sure that some surgeons want to remove any type of possible problem so if your surgeon is ok with you taking it, then ok.
In my case, I stopped birth control prior to my surgery. It was not for birth control purposes. It was for PCOS/hormone issues. And, after surgery I had to switch to another type of pill anyway. I did not want to get pregnant and not all pills are useful for wls patients due to our absorption issues.

I took birth control (after a tubal) for the same reasons as you. I had "staying regular" issues. I did stop my birth control 1 month before surgery (because I read it in my manual). I thought that I would have to go back on it after surgery, BUT it has been wonderful. I am regular now...Every month, on the dot...there it is. My GYN said he could not believe that with all the problems I have had in the past and with the fast weight loss that I have not had to get back on them to keep me regular. If you do not need them for birth control I would try to go without and just see what happens for you. I am so glad that I don't have to take them (keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way) due to the bad hype about the effects.
Good luck and hope this helps you....
