Choosing a surgeon?

Good Morning,

I chose Dr. Dyer. I went to a seminar that was held by Dr Houston and although I am sure he would be a good choice too, Dr Dyer was recommended to me by someone I worked with who used him many years ago (one of his first surgeries he had done). He was one of the first Dr's performing RNY (my surgery choice) in Middle TN when it first came here so he had the longest experience. When I met him I knew I had made the right choice. He was very patient and answered all of my questions. He came across as a Dr who would take his time during surgery to ensure everything went the best as possible. Now I have not had surgery yet. It is scheduled for June 8th, but I have all the confidence in my choice.

I have not met Dr. Olsen so I cant say anything about him.

Good Luck!

Hi Renee   Welcome. I had surgery May 5 and I chose Dr. Olsen. I personally recommend him but of course I would. Any Dr. a @ Centennial is wonderful. I wish you lots of luck and praying for a speedy journey to surgery and a will be waiting to congrats you at the losers bench.

Renee---if you haven't been in contact with Pam Davis at Centennial yet, she is your "go to" person for all things "best-place-in-the world (in my opinion...lol) to have WLS"!

I had RNY on St. Paddy's Day (March 17th) this year.  I went to a seminar held by Dr. Houston & was really impressed by his knowledge & approach to surgery.  Although I don't think you could go wrong with Dr. Dyer, Dr. Olsen or Dr. Houston at Centennial, Dr. Houston was my choice.  Now that I am almost 10 weeks out, I am such a huge fan of Dr. Houston's and would highly rec him to anyone.

You are making a great choice......register for a seminar & change your life!  Congrats on your decision to have WLS. xo, Micheala.

Wow!  I can't thank each and everyone of you enough for your suggestions.  I actually have been to the seminar at Centennial already, where I was introduced to Dr. Dyer.  I guess that is why I am leaning toward him.  In fact, I got an email already from Eloise telling me it was time to choose and schedule an appt with the surgeon of my choice...and that brought me here!!  Keep coming with the suggestions. It is so nice to have a network of people that are on the same journey you are!!  By the way, Cheryl, thanks for the invite today to Red Robin - every little bit of encouragement helps!!    I plan on calling a scheduling with them on Tuesday so who knows? The next post might be all about that appt!!

Thanks again!

~ Renee

Good morning Renee - I'm glad you're taking the advice from the seminar, talking to the folks at support groups and asking - why did you choose the procedure you did, why did you choose the surgeon you did and if you had it to do over again, would you make the same choices? I'm attaching a link to an article I wrote for the OAC News a couple of years ago, I believe most of it still holds true today www.obesityaction.org/magazine/oacnews/oacnews7/Choosing%20a%20Surgeon.pdf.

Looking forward to seeing you at group and preop. class!
