Who says that you cannot eat like a "normal" person after WLS?
Ok so tonight I was in the mood for a steak dinner. I was debating should I go to Kroger and buy the steak and fix it myself, or should I just go to Outback and get a "togo" order? They are in the same shopping center, so off I went.
Well I decided that I was going to make it myself. I had already poured over the Outback menu, but thought that the prices were a bit higher than I wanted to spend on dinner tonight.
I could have also just made dinner with something that was already in the fridge as I had just gone shopping yesterday. Nope, I wanted steak (fortunately, I am one that is able to eat steak) If you can eat it also, MAKE sure that you CHEW, CHEW, CHEW! Also get it more on the rare side. I like my steak medium rare, so no issues with me (I know I may as well eat it raw!)
I went in to Kroger and went to look for ONE steak as I did not need any more than that. I love Ribeye so I found one. ALRIGHT! It was on sale as well, $4.95 for the whole thing. It was just over 1/2 pound so 2 meals for me.
I then went to see what I wanted with it. I walked pass the seafood counter. They had all the shrimp on sale, YEAH! I saw the largest shrimp that I've ever seen. They were not called shrimp they were called Prawns! They were on sale for $9.99 a pound from $14.99 a pound.
Before some of you say WOW that is expensive. Think of this. You do NOT have to buy the whole pound. If you only want 3 ask for 3. That's what I did. He weighted them and it came to just over a 1/4 of a pound, $3.20. Not bad. I will get 2 meals out of this.
Check out how big these are:
Ok we were good to go. Well I wanted something else. Some sort of vegi. I walked to the produce and wanted to get some asparagus. I love the stuff. But I did not want to buy the whole bunch, besides I think that they were too fat. I passed. Then I looked at the broccoli, nope not really interested.
I passed the potatoes. The small new red potatoes to be exact. Ok don't get too excited, but I bought 2. 2 very small red new potatoes. Now remember I am at goal, or I should say reallllly close. I've not had any carbs all day so I thought no problem.
I checked out and the whole meal cost less than $10. I would have spent twice that at Outback.
Got home, cut up the potatoes into thin slices and sauteed them in some olive oil, salt and pepper.
I then coated the prawns also in some olive oil salt and pepper, stuck those in the oven to roast at about 450 degrees for about 6 minutes, flipped 1/2 way through.
Got out the George Forman Grill, seasoned the steak on both sides and grilled for about 4 minutes on each side. Remember I like my steak medium rare! Took that off let it rest and went back to the prawns. I peeled them and made up a really good ****tail sauce with some tomato sauce, prepared horseradish, salt, pepper and just a touch of splenda for sweatness.
I sliced 1/2 the steak into strips, put a touch of A1 sauce on it and it was complete:
So does that look good? I WAS good.
So here are the stats:
Steak:
Calories: 218.7
Carbs: 0g
Protein: 25g
Prawn:
Calories: 60
Carbs: 0g
Protein: 13.5g
Potatoes:
Calories: 30.3
Carbs: 7g
Protein: <1g
So totals are:
Calories: 309
Carbs: 7g
Protein: 38.5g
Plus a few extra calories for the olive oil, steak sauce and "****tail" sauce.
See you can still eat like a normal person after weight loss surgery.
I loved my dinner.
For those of you that are still new post-ops, this would be a meal that is ment for far out like I am (9 months) Some surgens say to wait before eating any type of steak. Please follow the advice of your doctor.
I feel that if I cooked this for my doctor, or even Paula (PDSmiles) they would be ok with it.

You're definitely right with steak, you must CHEW CHEW CHEW. I've had steak and been fine with it, but it was alot of chewing and anything that I couldn't chew up enough, I had to spit out, because it's not gonna play nice in the pouch. I think A1 or some kind of sauce helps too with all the chewing you have to do.

I'll be over in a few minutes to eat my dinner... your leftovers that is! LOL
Yes you did really good. I wish I could eat steak. My tummy doesn't fare well with it, but sometimes Tim will give me the most center part that is red and tender... and I enjoy a bite. But, I hope that changes some day, as did my disdain for hamburger. Recently I have been able to eat it again....
I had pizza for dinner. It's on Joseph's Lavash bread, made in our new small convection oven. It has green & red peppers, jalapenos, spices, mozarella cheese, and it is just wonderful.....
You should start a food blog. Your pics look quite tasty!

Yes I've been to Trader Joes, but I don't like them as much as I like Whole Foods. But I guess it all depends on what you are shopping for.
One other tidbit... I have found that at Walmart they have the store brand of Crystal Lite like all the other stores do, but they have a flavor that I LOVE! Apple.
It tastes just like apple juice. I love it. I usually don't goto Walmart, I don't like the crowds there and it is not as easy to get to like Kroger is. But for that Apple store brand Crystal Lite and the Lawreys band taco seasoning mix (make taco meat and have it on a taco salad) I get those.

You made me hungry and it is only breakfast time. Steak is one of my favorite meals. I seem to do well with it and I also like my steak medium rare. Of course at this point I do well to manage two ounces. I had a petite sirloin the other night at Ruby Tuesday's and it was so good. Surprisingly, it has still been fairly good reheated. I still have another meal left from it. The only missing from your meal for me would be a few mushrooms. I love mushrooms with my steak.

Sometimes I think maybe I can eat "too normal" -- but the cool thing is once you figure out what you can eat (and you are fortunate that you can eat somethings that not all wls patients can) and the healthy version ...and you are far enough out... you are "normal" with better choices. I do have to watch how many carbs I eat --not because of dumping but because I crave them the more I eat them...which is what puts the weight on me.
That meal was definitely a healthy choice AND "normal".
