Ok I need to know about your surgery
OMG i am sorry, I really don't know what it is but I was told it would be for the best. Something about if they have to give you blood and get a accurate blood pressure. Now some doctors don't require that. But I realize now we are strong and can take anything that is throwed at us. Now if you look up at what Holly said they will probably take all that stuff out in recovery so you might not even remember it,( if your doctor even requires it). I'm sorry I got you upset and worried I was that way also but the people here on the OH Tennessee forum really did come through for me and help me.
You know it must be up to the individual Doctor because I had heard about drains and catheters. So when I asked Doctor Richards he said he didn't use them? Now was that decision made patient by patient?? But I had none of those things and they had to do a biopsy of my liver as well do to liver disease. So really don't over think this it will be OK. Ask your WLS Team they will be glad to answer any concerns. Take Care C'ya Bob
The neck cath thing was decided by my anesthesia people. I had great veins in my hands so they put the largest needle in my hand (the one they can push blood through). They numbed my hand first with a tiny needle, and then I did not even feel the LARGE needle they used for the IV. I was really dreading the neck one too. But they can put you to sleep first if they have to.
They biggest thing for me was the itching from the pain meds. I have always had a reaction to pain meds in high doses like that. My husband brought me a back scratcher. It was the best thing. When I had to wear the leg air things...lol...I itches ten times more...I would stick the scrather down like scratching in a cast.
I was in pain, but I have 2 kids...That was worse. I was up walking within hours. Not as fast or as much as some, but it was not as bad as I had expected (in my freaked out mind) it to be. I was in the hospital for 5 nights (due to low grade fever everynite). I used the pain pump till I went home, but once at home I never took any pain meds.
They only problems I had at home were sleeping. I could NOT sleep on my side. I was very very uncomfortable. I ended up sleeping sitting up in a recliner for 1 week. But I did not get to sleep on my side (it was not really painful, just felt like it was pulling and would leave me VERY sore) for about 3 weeks out.
Showering for me was very tough (but remember I was there 6 days). I was very worn out (I had very little protein) and I could not stand for long enough, in the position you have to stand in to keep from getting stomach wet. Lucky me my mom was there and she would get in the bathroom with me and wash my hair, while I sat in a shower chair, and that made things go much faster.
Well hope this helps some..It really is not anything near as bad as you work yourself up to..I did the same thing.

Thanks so much this does help we have the same doctor so that is what I hope happens for me. I hate the neck cath thought so I hope they do put me to sleep. Pain meds make me sick was it a Stout pain med? Maybe they can give me something so I wont get sick. Again thanks for telling me how your surgery went it did help...
Okay being 4 days post op here is my version (LOL). Got to the hospital @ 5:30 a.m. went straight to the 2nd floor since all was done before hand. Was told to sit in the surgical waiting area and given a beeper. When it went off, I went and met with preop nurse, family was given the beeper told to ignore first beep but come to the desk upon second beep. When the preop nurse took me to prep room I was told to take all off except socks (I wear 2 pair, always have since diabetes onset) and put on their gown. Was asked bunches of questions, which are the same that I have been asked from the beginning. Then she paged my family but I only got to see them for 5 seconds cause they came to get me ready. I was wheeled to a room where I met the anthesiologist and his helpers. And I don't remember any names, none what so ever! I was asked a few questions (SOS) and then Dr. Olsen came in and asked if I was o.k. & ready. Then he left and they inserted and I.V. in my left forearm, gave me something that was WONNNNNDERRRRRFULLLL! They started applying all the EKG thingys. I was laid flat and tilted with my head down (at first I thought I was gonna slide off the table) then told to look to the left. then this oxygen mask was coming at me (or that's how it seemed) then a voice said TAKKKE A DEEPPP BREAAATHHHH (somewhere on the James Earl Jones side) I can barely remember 2 and then I woke up in the recovery room.
Recovery Room I was in and out, my first memory was thanking God that I was still alive! I remember fighting to stay alert, just because I wanted to be. When I finally knew what was happening I was not in pain. That was until the trip to my room, the floors have several BUMPS I could almost swear they are speed bumps, lol. I didn't have to be moved from my bed. I was asked a few question by the nurse and shown that magical GO button. It would turn green when I could pu**** and it loved me TRULY!
And like many others have said THIRSTY I was so thirsty but the sponges on a stick were miracles. And my family where right on top of it I would doze off and wake up with a sponge in my hand. I don't know how everyone elses gag reflex is but mine is wonderful and I would put in in my mouth as far back as possible and swirl the back of my mouth and work my way forward.
I of course don't sleep on my back due to snoring but that is the only position available. So that led to alot of dry mouth. But my family was right on top of it. I used my pain pump to the max, I was scared of pain so if I had much when it was hooked up I DON'T remember. I became aware of the neck cath when I tried to move and tugged on it. It never really bothered me except the few times I tugged on it (by accident) and it didn't really hurt was just irritating. The foley cath. was only bothersome because I always felt as if I needed to go pee, kinda like when you have a kidney infection and you used the toilet and it seems as though it all won't come out. That's the feeling I had. The next morning when they removed it I had only a little discomfort. She said take a deep breath and blow it out slowly. And that was it.
I didn't get to wal****il 10:30 p.m. the first night, things were hectic on the floor. So by the time I was up the only true pain I had was my BUTT, which has been continual! Walked a good distance, received my ATA GIRL's from my nurse, and then back to bed. I didn't get back up again that night. But once that Foley was out and I figured out how to unplug the stuff and was on the prowl. They wanted me to walk 4 times a shift, down one hallway first 2nd day then both hallways the 3rd day. Most of the time instead of pushing the call button I just walked untilI found my nurse and asked the question. I HATED that I.V. machine simply because of the oxygen sensor. I removed the oxygen the 2nd day and that night when I would fall asleep my head would fall to my *****ausing me to snore and not get as much oxygen as I needed or it thought I should have, SOOOO all through the night BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. I couldn't figure out how they stopped it so I was constantly buzzing them about that. This was removed the 3rd morning. Which was the day I finally braved taking a shower. I know 3rd day----sorry the fear of pain always overrides STINK! I had been washing off though but the shower was wonderful, best shower I have ever had. HONESTLY! And I have taken some awesome showers before.
Now let's back up to the 2nd morning. Dr. Olsen was there promptly ever morning @ 7:30 a.m. and the 2nd morning he asked a few questions and then said the foley could come out and I would be given a tray. I hadn't had any hunger, never crossed my mind. When the tray came it contained, 2-8oz cups of already mixed Crystal Light Punch, 1 pouch of Unjury (unflavored), 4 oz. chicken broth, 4oz jello. I had brought my blender bottle with me so I tossed both Crystal lights and the unjury packet. Shook them and liked it so much I am still doing it at home. Sipped most of the broth, all of the jello, then slowly sipped the unjury/crystal shake. I also drank lots of water. And had good amounts of output. If I could be of any help at all it would be keeping at least 2 of the cups they bring your crystal light in because when you are comsuming your protein sipping from a dainty cup to me is easier and not as overwhelming as that big blender cup.
On the 3rd day the thing I disliked most was the crushing of my meds. I don't care how much you crush or what you mix it with it is just plain nasty. But most of mine where diabetes meds so on my release day I was put on shots (sliding scale) I can live with that for now. It's about 3/4 less insulin(oral meds) than I was on.
Test yourself when sipping......each individual person has their own sip!!! I was sipping then I realized that I could handle a bigger sip. Just test yourself. I also like sipping from a straw.
Lunch and Dinner are the same as breakfast except with the addition of a S.F.popsicle. I hate these things. But it help with my intake of fluid.
Dr. Olsen removed the numbered tape from my incisions on the 3rd day. and said that the strips left would eventually fall off, that they were not healed but were closed. I got BOZO buttons for the amount of fluids that I was consuming. He also asked me each morn. if I had passed gas. I told him no and wasn't bothered with any. On the 2nd he said that he was prescribing a suppository, well that little voice in my head heard cause by noon I sounded like Radar O'Riley (MASH) and his bugle on a good day. I informed Dr.O. and he was pleased well that there nurse she expected more cause since it was prescribed she was gonna put that suppository somewhere.
So I was obligated and was happy that I had done so.....it helps with all the gas that at present I wasn't being bothered with. I don't think I've ever been that happy to POOP. So the 4th morning (the morning of release) I was proud as a pea**** telling Dr. O. my passage into the B.M. club (lol) He said I was ready to go home and I was on the road again @ around 11 a.m. It would have been shorter but I wanted to have one more shot of Loratab Elixir for the road ( I know how my honey drives), and they had to wait for some to be brought from the pharmacy. So since I don't live in Nashville I dropped my scripts off @ Walgreens and they up loaded them then about 30 mins from the one @ home I call and asked to have them filled and there was no time wasted.
I forgot to say that on the 3rd morning my pain pump was discontinued and they started giving me the elixir every 4 hours (but I had to ask for it) And being the big chicken that I am I always had my hand up.
Since being home I have continued the same routine. I have the same breakfast (8 a.m.) lunch (1 p.m.) and supper (6 p.m.). Hopefully I'm not doing wrong but because of my disgust with S.F. popsicles I have increased the broth to 6oz. I will know Monday when I call the nut.
I have worried myself about coming home and getting an intestinal blockage, so I noticed for about 4 hrs. this morning I was feeling really bloated. So I grabbed my newest copy of Star and camped out in the bathroom. The gas was scary and the B.M. was a slight bit painful but everything came out alright (lol). So it's getting close to lunch time I will talk later.
If I forgot anything just let me know and I will tell (I can hear it now----there's more?)
