I am looking for the nearest place to Nashville to see about having the Rose procedure.  I would also be interested in hearing from someone who has had a revision.  Thanks

Dr. Houston spoke at a support group last week at CMC and I think he said they do the rose procedure.   Do you have a gastric bypass?  If he said he can convert that into something like the duodenal switch.  They would keep your pouch intact (this is the part where it is different from the ds since the ds has a stomach that functions the same as ever) but re route your intestines to act like the ds.

Do you mind if I ask why you need a Rose procedure?  Did your first surgery not help you lose the weight you wanted, was there a problem with it?  Or, did you regain?  I'm just curious, because lately some of my OLD pre wls health issues have returned...  I read a subject lately on another board about these same health issues, and the lady who posted said that she believes some people who have regain might actually have problems with insulin & glucose, causing them to regain...  I am just curious if perhaps a medical condition causes folks to gain and then causing them to seek a revision.

I didn't have diabetes...  I had problems with PCOS, Insulin Resistance, Metabolic Syndrome.  The problems I am still experiencing are related to insulin being stored in the fatty sections of my abdomen...  and some believe wls cures PCOS.  However, from what I have seen, and am now starting to experience only on a mild level, it does not "cure" it.

It's believe that PCOS is caused or exacerbated by weight gain.  However, even thin folks have PCOS.  I believe that PCOS/Insulin Resistance CAUSED my obesity.  (And if that is the case, COULD the existence of PCOS cause weight gain?  hmm that is something I do not know either, but NOT willing to find out...  weight gain is not an option for me after working so hard to get to this point)...   While the Insulin Resistance is somewhat related to diabetes, I'm not speaking to that particular disease because I really do not know...

But the IR/Met Syndrome/PCOS are all very complex issues...  and actually there are many who have had wls (females) who in the past were diagnosed as PCOS as well.  I would encourage all those individuals to monitor their diets, measurements, body changes very cautiiously.  And if they do notice any midsection gain, speak to their Gyn or even Endocrinologist as soon as possible so that it does not get out of control.

I hope I am wrong.  I could be wrong.  I wish I was wrong.  But I am going to see an endo and a gyn.  It would take me more time to explain all the complicated info...  I've been researching like a mad woman lately...  and have a long list of stuff to discuss with the doctors...  And another issue to make it all worse is that I've entered perimenopause, the hormones are all whacked out, and its all tied together in a big jargled mess...

I hope you'll let us know what your endocrinologist says about this.   I'm really interested to hear.   I've been under the impression that the PCOS is more along the lines of causing obesity, rather than the other way around.   PCOS tends to include insulin resistance, which definitely has a tendency to increase obesity.   Insulin resistance results in a lot of insulin in the system.   Which makes people HUNGRY.

Insulin resistance is Hugely related to diabetes.   I'd think that someone who suspected PCOS would be better off speaking with an endocrinologist if you can get your insurance to okay it.   An endocrinologist would tend to have a better understanding of the syndrome as a whole than a gyno doc.   IMHO

I did go to the new Gyn today.  Why do I want to call her my OB? LOL.  GYN!  I do not need an OB!

Anyway, she did say that she felt an endocrinologist would be the best bet, and gave me the name of a good one she knows in Nashville.  She said "honestly, we just don't know enough about bariatric patients when it comes to these issues."  Which is the exact same thing that the compounding pharmacist told me as well....

She did say that she thought one thing that could be happening is the Mirena side effects... It mimicks menopausal symptoms...  but she felt that was the BEST method of my birth control and also help toward my issues...  she ordered a FULl thyroid panel to see if I had underactive thyroid.  I am scheduled tomorrow for a bone density (dexa) scan.  Dr Houston had wanted me to have one some time back, and I did not go ahead and pursue it...

Oh yeah and I showed her my weight scale...  2007-08 my weight always remained less than 125.  Now, it stays above 125, either right at, or 128, sometimes 130's during "TOM"...  she said that with the Mirena, there is almost always a 5 lb water weight ALL the time.  ICK!  Well I guess it would just make me feel better knowing whatever my weight is, deduct 5 lbs??    "That's not weight gain, Dr. Houston.  Really.  It's water."  Yeah I wonder if he'd believe that!

As for the constant fatigue, she said that 60% of people are Vitamin D deficient.  And, it sounded like (since my labs were low in Vit D) it could be a contributing factor.  She stated that the endocrinologist would surely be interested in reviewing my case due to the problems and gastric procedure.  I will let you all know what unfolds....  She said that the wls did help patients who had Pcos to become fertile, but did not go into anyhing about the Insulin Resistance.

I asked her, "Do I have it? Do I Not have it?  I don't know.  That's why I want to get to the bottom of these problems..."

Not to hijack this thread but I have a thyroid disorder that I believe was caused by a lifetime of being morbidly obese not the other way around.  Since I was a child they kept checking me for hypothyroidism because of my weight (every new doctor was sure that was my problem) but it wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I developed hypothyroidism.

Some endocronologists believe there is a connection between diabetes (both type I and II) and thyroid disorders and that one may cause the other and that if a patient has both you can't successfully treat one without treating the other.

My diabetes has been fine (gone?) since right after my surgery and my thyroid levels are slowly edging towards normal.  My doctors are not sure if we can hope as my weight continues to drop if I can hope to one day be rid of my thyroid disorder or if this is a honeymoon phase and eventually it will come back as bad as it ever was.

There is just not enough long term information of WLS patients.

Thanks for your reply.  I did have the gastric bypass (in 03) however did not reach my goal weight.  I developed ulcers which caused me to have to have several stretches (at least 10) via EGD over the past 6 years.  Food continued to "ferment" in my stomach causing major gas and GERD (sorry I know that is gross) and consquently, my stomach is back to original size.  I maintained the same weight for about 4 yrs but the past 3-4 months I have gained probably 20 lbs.  My clothes don't fit which leaves me feeling depressed and I am wanting to fall back into the pattern of eating.  I am trying to maintain control but it is hard.  That is why I am looking for a revision and the Rose Procedure looks good because it is less invasive.  Good luck to you..looks like you are doing awesome!
