Vandy people?

I was approved for surgery on the 6th of April. I thought
I would get a surgery date like..within days. I still do not
have one. Instead they wanted me to take a test to see
if I had been smoking. (WHICH I HAVE NOT). Now I am
having to wait on that test to come back and get put in
the right hands. Did anyone else have such a long wait
on a surgery date? Did you get one after you were approved?

When I say anything at all to Vandy, I am told they are
sorry things have not went my way. I guess not expecting
an answer like that.  Any suggestions would help.

Hey'ya!!  It did seem like forever between approval and getting a surgery date.   I think a lot of the problem has been the move to 100 Oaks, I think once they get settled in and things settle down it will help.

When did you have your test?  Hopefully you will have the results and everything will get moving soon for you in the right directions!!

Really, did they wait awhile before you got your surgery
date? Like how long?

I went looking for my calendar from last year, but couldn't find it (probably in desk at school) BUT... I want to say, I was approved like around mid October, and I had my letter before the doctor's office had theirs.  THEN, when they still didn't get their letter a few days later, I faxed a copy of mine to them.   I had my surgery date the day before Halloween, cause when we took Mom and Dad out for their anniversary on Halloween we were celebrating my surgery too!  So, without the extra test you are having to do, it still took a bit over two weeks to get a date I think?!?!

Sometimes they order extra tests pre-op to make sure everything is okay for the surgery.  They want the surgery to succeed MORE that you do!(They have to be concerned with statistics!)  And even if you haven't been smoking, you can imagine that others may not be as honest.  Smoking and surgery(anesthesia to be exact) do not mix at all!  They are just being careful and I'm sure you want them to be as careful as they can be!  I understand how hard it is to wait, but it will happen and be over before you know it! It's only been 2 weeks since approval and maybe you get the call this week!

Thanks Erika,
Maybe it is the NOT SMOKING that is making me be so
anxious. I promise I'm not the kind of person that sends food back all the time or complains all the time about
how my service was anywhere.

I just feel helpless. You are right. It will be my turn soon.

It probably is the not smoking.  I come from a family of smokers and I honestly think quitting smoking is harder than losing weight.  Think about it--at least I had a choice for an operation(no matter how drastic some think it is) to help me lose weight--there is nothing like that for smokers(or alcoholics--in my family you can be an alcoholic, a smoker or obese).  So I'll say a little prayer for you for your smoking--hang in there! erika

Some of the people at Vandy are not the most helpful.  But hang in there.  It took longer for me to get my date from Vanderbilt than it did for Blue Cross to approve the procedure!

The small issues with the up front team are easy to deal with when looking at the program as a whole.  I adore my surgeon, nurse Jennifer N and my dietician.

I figure if there are any bumps in the road, let it be in the early stuff.  Hopefully the rest will be smooth sailing.

And congrats on getting the DS--I didn't even know until recently that they were offering it here!

Good luck and I'm sure you'll get that date soon.  Waiting is the hardest part!!!
