Incase anyone is wondering...
...I'm doing not badly. I'm still burping a lot, but nowhere near as much as I was. I am down nearly 80 pounds since my surgical date (12/19/2008). I'm off diabetes meds and my fasting sugars are running near-normal. I'm broke as all get out because I haven't been able to go back to work. I have no computer for the time being because mine died and I am poor. I have an appt with a GI specialist this coming week. I had a swallow study done and the woman who did it said she saw a lot of spasming around my asophogus (which is probably not spelled like that).
I (finally!) saw the speech therapist, and she does not think I'm swallowing lots of air. She thinks that I need to see the GI doctor, considering the spasms that were observed in the swallow study. In the month (yes, month!) between my initial consult with the speech & swallowing clinic and my first appointment with her, I came to a similar conclusion, and had already scheduled the visit for next week. However, she does think I'm swallowing some air, so she'll work with me a bit on airflow issues in the meantime.
I'm wondering if the trauma of the surgery to my GI tract hasn't reactivated my old nervous stomach (which was severe enough that it made me miss a good portion of sixth grade). The doctors treated it with medication, and eventually it calmed down nicely. Since then, my stomach still spasms in reaction to emotional stresses (fear, anxiety, hurt, shock) but not painfully. I haven't used meds for it since I was eleven or twelve, but it still exists.
I'll be honest...I'm a bit mad at Dr. Husted. I feel like he just asked no questions. He told me that time would calm it down, he told me to take Gas-X or phazyme, neither worked. After that, he asked no questions. I feel like Dr. Husted is an amazing surgeon, but not really much of a doctor. Does that make any sense? Well, that is what made me post my previous question. I realize now that I will NEED a primary care doctor who I can really work with, including on DS issues.
Honestly, I'm glad that I had the surgery. As well as I am otherwise doing, I would recommend Husted to anyone in a minute, without hesitation. However, I would give them the caveat that they will need to have a medical support structure in place for after the surgery, especially if they are not directly local to Somerset, KY.
A friend of mine offered to take some pics of me this weekend. I'll get them posted so you can all see how I'm looking.

God writes a lot of comedy... the trouble is, he's stuck with so many bad actors who don't know how to play funny.

Good to hear from you Sarah! I was just thinking about you the other day. Down 80 pounds since December? WOW! I'm so happy you're off the diabetes meds and your sugars are doing so well.
Jealous!
Sorry to hear that you're having a bit of tummy issues. But you seem to be in touch with some doctors and working on the problem.
It makes complete sense about Husted being an amazing surgeon but not much of a doctor. I have a friend; we met when she was working on her PhD. She didn't want to get a real job, so she decided to go to med school instead. We all laughed--yeah, sure. I hope she's a pathologist because there's no way she could have a decent bedside manner! Though the Husted situation is different, it makes sense. Plus having to deal with postoperative care in Nashville with the surgeon in KY makes it challenging.
Looking forward to seeing the new you pics--tell your friend to get over there to snap them STAT!

Hey Sarah - Sorry I have not called you back the several times you called work has been so busy. I am glad to hear the burping has gone down a little, hopefully the GI doctor will have some answers for you and maybe a solution to stop the burping. I don't burp like you (when I talk to much) but I do find myself making myself burp (over and over) after I eat , it makes me feel soo much better.
I will try to give you a call maybe we can go out for lunch this weekend.
