Anybody taking Topamax???

I just started taking Topamax a couple of weeks ago.  On Wednesday, the nurse practitioner increased the bedtime dose significantly.  This morning, I got out of bed, and promptly passed out, scaring the wits out of my poor hubby.  I passed out due to orthostatic hypotension-my blood pressure dropped really low when I stood up. When I went to my neurosurgeon for a followup appt a few minutes ago, he thought it might have been caused by an absorption problem with the increased dose with the Topamax and he decreased the dose.  He said that the RNY isn't always malabsorptive, sometimes we absorb things too quickly, like with alcohol and physicians are needing to learn rapidly about this since the number of people having the surgery has increased so much in the past year.  He also said "Thank God" at that time! Anyway, I thought I might pass along this info to all.   The good thing is he said the Topamax should really help me lose these last 29 pounds!  Oh, and he cleared me to go back to work in April!  WOOHOO! Now if the orthopedic surgeon will do that next week!

Glad to hear they cleared you for work. By the way I thought Topamax was a feminine hygiene product! BwaHahaha

Marilyn,
I take Topamax for the prevention of migraines.  I started out taking 25 milligrams a day and built up to 200 milligrams a day increasing by 25 milligrams each week.  I didn't have any adverse effects and have been on it for several months.  However, before I began taking it if I would get up too fast from a completely prone position, I would sometimes get so dizzy that I would feel as if I was going to pass out.  That still happens from time to time and I think it's just because my blood pressure now runs quite low (and did so before I began taking the Topamax).  But, I will certainly keep this information in mind and will bring this to the attention of my doctor should I begin experiencing any issues with the medication.  Thanks for posting this and for watching out for those of us that are taking this medication.

Glad to hear you have been cleared to go back to work.  I know you are excited about starting your job and getting back into the swing of things with a new experience.  Stay healthy between now and then and keep up the good work.
