Support groups, fitness???
I really am trying to eat right and lose some weight before surgery--so that I have healthier organs and heal better. I have been really trying to self-educate and change my whole life around physically and mentally so that I can keep the weight off long term. I realize that I am always so motivated after a weigh-in and the brief session with the dietician. Does anyone know if there are some support group meetings in the Memphis area. I would prefer if it were more than once a month. I really think this is going to help me. Also, has anyone tried group walking or anything with other WLS patients? I feel like I would be more successful if I had some people around me that knows what I am going through as I prepare myself for this lifelong commitment--I guess you could say I am on training wheels now and need a friendly help with taking off!
oh by the way, Happy New Year!

Good Luck on your journey Jagee345!
I'm sure some people from the Memphis area will add to what Cathy has said. I live in Nashville, so I am not to familiar with the support groups on the western side of the state.
I agree, it is a lot easier when you can go to a meeting more than once a month. I myself, go to the hospital led group once a month, but am actively involved here on Obesity Help. I find that I can always find someone here to talk to, or bounce a question off of.
Also, look for groups that are not hospital led. For example, we have a couple of groups here in town that meet for lunch once a month, or dinner once a month. That tends to help also.
Another outlet that I have is a group of us that email each other. We have formed a small, intimate group of WLS patients, that speak to each other at least once (sometimes more !) once a day. It helps to hold each other accountable in our actions. The topics run the gamut of "What's for lunch", to "I can't believe I ate that last night". Without this group of "Musketeers", I would truly be lost!
So, here's to finding what works for you. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress. If you ever need anything, give me a shout!

Oh yeah..."Happy New Year to you also!"
