Ok I'm going to my PCP
I've only been to this new doctor once. I had been going to a walk in clinic for a couple of years and switched to a regular doctor. I have an appointment with him on Monday to talk to him about my referral letter. I'm not sure what his thoughts are about WLS, much less writing my referral letter for me (since I've only been to him once). I am wandering if he doesn't write it if I should go to the clinic and talk to the NP that I had been seeing. Since I'm trying to switch doctors I'm afraid I'm going to be in a dilemma. I feel like if I go back to the clinic that I'm going behind the doctor's back.

I had somewhat the same kind of deal. The only Dr I had seen for a long time was my OBGYN. I only saw my PCP twice before asking for a letter to have the surgery. I think that if your PCP has nothing against WLS then he probly will write the letter if he feels you need it. It sure can't hurt to ask. I would also ask any and all doctors that you have seen in the past, no matter what kind of doctor they are. All they can say is no! My OBGYN, my foot doctor, and my PCP all wrote letters for me and then I got my approval in like two weeks. I am not saying you will get yours that fast but, every letter I think helps.

Thanks for your response. I had called my endocrinologist in Columbia to let him know I had went to a seminar (now this was after I had already talked to him in the office about it) and that I needed this referral letter. The nurse calls me back saying that the only times he gives referral letters was when he actually referred someone. I haven't thought about my OBGYN though of course I only see them once a year. I'm hoping Monday I will have a letter from at least one doctor anyway. I may have to leave there and go to the clinic and speak with the NP too.

You may want to refer to the letter as a "letter supporting my need for weight loss surgery" and not a "referral" letter. That may help.

Hey Pam, I was in the seminar with you and Dr. Houston on July 29th. I'm just not sure what he's going to say since I've only been to him one time. If he won't sign it then I'll have to go to the clinic and see if the NP will sign it. You already have my records from the NP, but I hate to go to her since I had swapped doctors. I guess I'm going to do what I have to do though to get this surgery done.
