Malt-o-Meal with a twist.
For us Newbies it can be a challenge to get your protein in while on the puree or soft food phase. So here's something I tried and turned out pretty good. First took a packet of Instant Cream of Wheat 3g protein 0 sugar, then added 2/3 cup EAS Shake 15g, then added 1/3 cup Carnation Instant Nonfat Dry Milk 8g (12g of sugar, but this is Lactose, per: my NUT it doesn't effect you like sugar, unless your Lactose intolerant). Shake it up together, poor in bowl micro for 75 sec. and eat! This gives you a good warm breakfast with 26g protein. I've enjoyed it with no problem reminds me of Malt-o-Meal when I was a kid (if they even still make it).
Hey Bob L.....
It is so good to see you up and around and trying new stuff...... Have you been released to go back to work yet???? I was just wondering if Jersey has seen your smiling self.....
Hmmm... Malt O Meal.....Ummm okay,.... you are a whole lot older than I am and I dunno what Malt O Meal is cause that is food for the kids back in the fifties or sumthin when they could not wait to get their Secret Decoder Rings in the U S Mail.... LOL
But with you being So Much Older than me and stuff I am thinking this Malt O meal stuff sounds pretty good...
I love what you have come up with here..... I might just start selling the MALT O MEAL T shirts along side the IDGOMB Tshirts.... LOL
Just remember that we as post ops do not have to worry about Carb counting..... Your nutritionist will lay all this out for you and it sounds like to me that you have a pretty good handle on what your nutritionist has planned out for you.... We have to worry about getting in so much protein and other critical things as a post op that you have lots and lots of time in the future to worry about carbs.... Do Not Worry about Carbs.... You are doing wonderful.......

I am pretty sure she meant as a new post-op. She said you can worry about that later. I know my NUT pretty much said the same thing newly pre-op too was to not worry about about Carbs because you are mostly focusing on fluid and protein that you aren't eating enough carbs to count. When you switch to pureed/soft foods, they also don't think you can get in enough carbs to matter if you are following the plan to get in your protein. They mostly focus on carbs later on. I know I ate mashed potatoes with gravy on occasion when I first started soft foods as a change and I don't remember my NUT complaining because you don't eat enough and eating anything at that point is a step up from fluids.

Hey Melinda,
No, I meant on the puree stage. On this stage you are only eating about 1/4 cup of food 2 or 3 times a day. And maybe a little more if you are a Lap Bander.
Of course we know the main goal at this point is to make sure that we are getting in enough protein. So on this puree stage most surgeons like to see that we try to get that from things like
scrambled eggs,
no sugar added yogurt,
baby food meats,
low fat cottage cheese,
or pureed chicken, fish or tofu.
Also on this approved list during the puree stage are items that include
smooth oatmeal,
cream of wheat
cream of rice
baby food vegetables and fruits
and pureed vegetables and fruits.
Now carbs are going to need to be kept at a minimal for the rest of your life because of your body's protein requirements. However, your body needs carbohydrates for energy. I have been told the best sources are whole grains like oatmeal, whole wheat bread and long grain brown rice.
But in this early first couple of weeks after surgery on the puree stage the name of the game seems to be protein, and trying to survive on 1/4 cup a food at a meal and getting well after a major surgery. Trying to factor carb count into that equation that early in the game would be pretty much overwhelming.... If a patient will eat just what is on the list that their nutritionist provided, I don't see from the list of food choices where carb count would even have to be a consideration.
