Move over Shoneys!
Tim & I went to Shoneys last night for supper. He wanted a piece of strawberry pie, but they had none left. So, we came home... I was at work in the kitchen without his knowledge... and whizzed up a sugar free strawberry pie...
I used a box of strawberries
1/2 container of T. Marzetti's sugar free strawberry glaze
Spray whipped cream
Already made graham cracker crust (6 g sugar per 1/8 serving, so you may want to make your own or have a very small piece of crust)
Slice berries to the size you prefer. I quartered them. Add your sugar free glaze. Pour into graham cracker crust. Top with whip cream. He loved it, I loved it. The dog would have loved it, but we don't allow her ot have table food! lol

I have made this before. I have never made a whole pie though - Corey isn't into Strawberries and the whole thing would be too much temptation for me. So, to improvise, I use Murrays SF Shortbread cookies. I put a few on a plate and top with fresh sliced strawberries, the SF glaze you mentioned and SF Cool Whip. Single serving! Yumm!

Bob, It seems every doctor and every plan is completely different. When I went to my 2 month checkup with my doctor, I talked to my nutritionist about what I could and couldn't eat and I specifically asked about fresh fruit which I crave in the spring and summer. She told me I could eat pretty much anything I wanted to at that point that was allowed - no fried foods, no junk food, no sweets, etc. As far as the fruit was concerned, she told me that was fine if I wanted to try the, but to try them one at a time and to remember that the natural sugar in them might be more than my system could handle and that I could potentially dump from them. So far, I have sampled, grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, pineapple, strawberries, and apple. The only thing I have had a problem with is the apple. I put some apple and grapes in chicken salad and the first serving I had out it, I was fine, but the 2nd helping (which was the next day after it had been in the fridge overnight) made me quite nauseous. I'm thinking it was the combination of the grapes and apple together and it sitting overnight in the fridge caused all the sugars to come out full force. So, needless to say, I'm a little cautious about apples right now. I would love to have a banana, but they are pretty high on the glycemic index and I'm just not interested in being on the floor with stomach cramps and running to the bathroom. So, for now, I will stay away from bananas. Oh, one other thing, as far as cantaloupe and honeydew melon go - they were not as good to me now as they used to be, so I will probably stay away from them as well. I just can't see myself wasting time eating something that just doesn't taste good and has a low nutritional value.
Just remember, if you are unsure about something be sure to consult with your medical staff too. Everyone on here is great and has a wealth of information and knowledge, but as I said every doctor and program are different and you need to follow what your doctor has established for his patients.
I'm in love with you melsreturn. lol I loved Shoney's strawberry pie and in about 4 months I'll be able to eat a good for me version. My NUT doesn't allow fruit until either 6 months out or goal weight.
I also love the idea about the single serving with the shortbread cookies too. I'll have to make the whole pie because I have 2 teenagers. lol

Of course I can only quote my doctor's rules, but he did not want us to eat fresh fruit for 6 months postop. Frozen, we could do some. Not sure as to why... something to do with acids in fruits...? Someone else could possibly enlighten that has Dr. Houston, Olsen or Dyer...
But in 2 large raw strawberries, there are 3 sugar grams. Typically, they suggest that you only stay within 5-10 g sugar per meal/consumption period. I had about 3 in the berries, 3 in the pie crust, and I did fine. Later, if you really get a craving for fruit, you can get one or two small berries, put a little whip cream and sugar free chocolate syrup on them and it will be like a taste of heaven. But that is, if your nutritionist agrees, or you should venture out from what you have been instructed to do. I did add this in about 4 mos after surgery, and it was only very occasionally. But it was oh so good.
At your stage, Bob, I would surely stay away from fruit and sugar free products. They will actually stall your weight loss because often times, sugar free products have just as many, if not more calories, fats, carbs and will stop weight loss. But at this point, I am allowed to have these items in moderation. Plus, I have upped my protein in forms of shakes, drinks and at supper, before eating, my protein was 116. For the day its 146. and the caloric daily intake was at a low. I could afford to spend the calories as well. That is something to look forward to in maintenance.
Now I might add, I do live a very disciplined eating lifestyle and plan when I will have (1) desserts, (2) alcoholic beverages. Its about moderation, planning. Hope this helps.
Scott,
Who needs a memory? We have you?!? LOL. You know... I could not remember for the life of me what I used last time. I did have a sf angel food cake in the freezer... and made strawberry shortcake from that as well. But I did not want shortcake. I thought the pie sounded good... but was too lazy to throw a crust together. I own every SF Murrays cookie there ever was! They are in the pantry, but rarely do I actually open them. I find that just owning them brings satisfaction to me in CASE I want them. But never really DO want them.
But, the individual servings are good. The whipped cream kind of went kapoot in the fridge overnight. But its still good. I also like the sound of the wwwhrrrrrrrrrr of the whip cream as I spray it on... and its so pretty. You can surely tell that I am no Betty Crocker. Just fascinated with the sight and sounds! haha
