Non Fat Dry Milk???
OK just when you think your understanding this stuff!
Vandy says add Non Fat Dry Milk to Hood's milk to increase the protein, OK. But I notice Non Fat Dry Milk has 12g sugar 1/3 cup and Hood's Milk has 3g sugar per 8 oz. which brings sugar to 15g per 8 oz. if mixed as instructed.
Now I've been told that Dumping can occur if you exceed 15g of sugar.
So I really don't want to Dump aren't we pushing the envelope a little with the max sugar grams?
What am I missing?
Also purchased Any Whey Protein Powder which you can heat as in cooking or add to drinks cold or hot, whi*****reases protein 17g per scoop 0g sugar, supposedly tasteless.
Thanks for your help. Bob

The Unflavored whey protein can't be heated. At least not the one I got from GNC. Because it made anything I added it to smell really funky. The taste was even worse. Have you looked at other NON fat dry milks? Or are they all the same with the sugars? I was told by my doc not to exceed 10 grams of sugar.

ps where did you find Hoods in Clarksville??? I'll start backwards.
Found Hood's at Wal-Mart St. B, Reg. and Chocolate.
Yes I checked two different Non Fat Dry Milk brands and they both had the same sugar grams? So don't know.
But The Whey Protein I picked up states its can be heated it even shows examples like oatmeal, sauces, soups, baked goods, beverages, its called 100% Any WHEY Protein.
So heck gidget I don't know?
Thanks for your help. by the way GNC started carrying Tropical Oasis Liquid Calcium.
C' ya Bob
I would try the whey protein mixed in something warm BEFORE surgery. Just so you know if it works or not.
Thanks for the tip about the Wallyworld in St B. I will keep a look out on this side of town to see if I can find any non fat dry milk with less sugar. Did you know quaker makes a lower sugar oatmeal now too?

Unless you are a willing participant in an experiment to see how many sugars 'Bob can have before dumping', I dont think I would add the nonfat dry milk to the Hood milk. As soon as your surgery is done, you probably will not want to do dairy for awhile. Add water to your protein powders. Do you have some protein supplements? EAS Low Carb Advantage shakes sold at Walmart and Kroger would be good choices early on for shakes if you are unable or unwilling up front to pay more money for something you may not tolerate well. We'll see what everyone else has to say, but many times wls new postops are lactose intolerant. Many docs dont want their patients using dairy so early out. We talk a lot about Hood, and it is the lowest in sugar content. But, it was not something that I used very early after surgery. I used water. Then when I needed more substance from my protein shakes, to make them thicker, and more calories, I started on the Hood Fat Free calorie countdown... then when I needed more substance, I started on the Hood 2% calorie countdown. It depends on how much you want to allow sugar in to your diet, how many lbs you want to lose faster, because milk isn't the best choice early.
It does sound like too much sugar, in a nutshell. I never used dry nonfat milk. I do have some now but I have used it one time. Hope this helps. One thing for sure, be afraid, be very afraid of sugar. It will kick your arse so fast. And one thing - you will never forget your first dumping episode.
Mmmmmmm......
Okay Bob, you are gonna force me to pull out my old "home from the hospital papers" which also had a warning on them that stated "If you do not adhere to the following we can not be responsible" LOL>>>>>>
I can not recall anywhere about the addition of "Non fat dry milk"
So, you are gonna force me on a Saturday afternoon that consist of mostly thunderstorms and a temprature of under 48 degrees to go pull out my freaking papers.... LOL Did I happen to mention that it is the end of March and I have pear trees that are blooming..... LOL......
I digress
This is what I have learned about Nonfat dry milk"
It is a wholesome dairy product made from fresh milk..... Only the cream and water are removed... It still contains the calcium and other minerals, the vitamins, and natural sugar along with high quality protein that make this liquid milk such a valuable food.
You have to remember that natural sugar and "processed sugars" are two complete different things.... Because of our "bypass" the small intestine can not tolerate "processed sugar"...It can not even process high levels of fat for that matter.... (Those consist of Fried Foods)
This is just my opinion and you can probably buy it on any level of marketing for around oh I don't know, let's say 0.02 cents... LOL... Because I assure you my opinion will not get you anywhere...... But, If your surgeon's office puts it in writing and that is what they reccomend you to do then I would have to say "Go With It".
You have to remember that Vanderbilt is a "teaching" hospital. And any knowledge that they are able to obtain and tell you about has been researched and researched again on "human guinnea pigs"... (I do not mean that in a bad way under any stretch of the imagination, I just don't know how else to put it..) The Vanderbilt hospital staff surgeons teach all the other surgeons in the area that want to come in and make a lucrative business.... Is this a bad thing??? Heck no..... Free Commerce is what it is all about right? I agree with that.... And thank "God" for choices.... I guess if I want you to take anything away from this post.. I want you to do your own independant... research... research...research.... Knowledge is power..... And don't ever ever ever let anyone make you think different....
Please tell Debbie that I can't wait tilll April fools day

If you are unsure, e-mail the nut. She will e-mail you back that day. Make sure before trying out. I use the sweet acidolpholis (sp) of course I am not taking much down at all, just enough to get the protein down. So far I've do alright on it. I have the whey protein, it has the best healing effect to it. So I decided to start with it, then after my healing, but I am a diabetic, and inside I want to make sure is healing completely, then I will start with the others and venturing out, sampling others. But for right now I feel this is best for me.

Bob,
A couple of thoughts. All our surgeons have somewhat different post op diets. You have chosen your surgeon, so follow his/her directions! They know what works best for the surgery that they do. And, no, not all RNY surgeries are exactly the same.
As for me, my surgeon and nut did want me to use either nonfat dry milk or skim milk in almost everything for the first month, to pump up the protein. I used skim milk instead of the nonfat dry milk. The reason for that was personal choice. My mom made us drink nonfat dry milk mixed with water as kids, and I HATED it! Sp, none for me as an adult!
Ron went out and bought me AnyWHEY powder right after surgery. We learned very quickly that you have to be very careful using it with hot things. It has to be made into a paste with cold water, then the hot stuff slowly added to it, otherwise it makes a curdlike consistency...yuk! Later on, it is great added to cottage cheese pancakes, or any baking! The best thing that I did was buy the orange and/or grape flavored 42g protein New Whey bullets. You can get them at GNC and Vitamin Shoppe. I made protein jello with it. I also made protein pudding with EAS Whey Protein in chocolate-just add a scoop to the sugar free pudding powder before you add the skim milk.
Bob, you are going to do great. You are in our prayers this week. Call if you need anything!
Marilyn
Thanks everyone for your input.
Thanks gidget for taking the time to look it up on the web.
Barb I'm surprised you didn't get the same yellow sheet marked Full Liquid Grocery List, the third thing on it is *Double strength milk - 1 cup (8 ounces) skim milk mixed with 1/3 cup of non-fat dry milk powder?
Being you and I have the same Doc. and staff.
Melinda, they did say that some patents that never had a problem with lactose intolerance can become so after WLS I guess its a wait and see thing.
Trina I agree that researching on your own is important as part of that research the best resource is picking the minds of you who have life experience. Did that sound like I was calling you old!!! Hahaha
Marylin thanks so much for your explanation, made sense also the advise on the Whey Protein. I have tried and do have some 42g protein New Whey Bullets. Thanks for the offer of help, Deb and I appreciate it.
Thanks all for your time and knowledge.
C' ya Bob
