Sue Wilson's Daughter here
Hello to all who have sent well wishes to me through Mom and a big thanks. I went to my one week post op visit today and I left Dr.Houston's office in tears. I got out of the hospital last Thursday afternoon so today has been exactly one week on my own and I am down 10 pounds and thought that I was doing pretty good considering how soar I am. Well, he was not happy and said it should have more like 15-20 down. He was very rude about it and made me feel like crap!!! Am I on track with 10 pounds or should it have been more, I just feel aweful and if anyone has any advise I sure could use it! Thanks for listening,Take care to all.

that is the most horrible thing I have ever heard. I cannot believe he was mean to you so soon out. I didn't go to the dr. until 2 weeks out, but I know I had gained weight when I first came home because of the fluid they pump into you.
Please don't get discouraged, OK. Just make sure you are following ALL directions completely, EVERYTHING. Any deviation can cause you to stall or become sick. I am so sorry, but don't give up. You are doing fine.

Hi Stacy. I am happy to see that you are up and moving around pretty good at a week post-op. It sounds like you are recovering well. I would not take his "critisism" to harshly. I am surprised he would say good or bad at this point since everyone loses differently depending on the amount of weight they need to lose ..etc. I know at one week post-op you are still swollen and still trying to get all of the gas and fluid you got in the hospital out of your body. I do not think anyone loses too much the first week or two. I am sorry he hurt your feelings like that but I would say losing 10 pounds is a great start! I hope you continue to have a healthy and quick recovery and keep up the great work on losing weight!

Ok Let me just say I am a patient of Dr. Houston's. He is very short. To the point. If you need him though, I swear to you that he will run circles around the moon to be there for you. As you see him more, you will develop a quiet relationship with him that runs deep. So hang in there. He really does have your best interest at heart. What it will do for you is make you accountable to him for your choices. Right now your body just might not want to let go of tha****er & fluid from surgery... .dunno about that, but I do know that so early on, when you know you have to face him, you will surely do your dangest bestest to make him happy.
When I had my gall bladder out, I could not have asked for anyone better. He will look at the facts, through your charts, and he will not chit chat with you until he has made a correct assessment of your situation. He did not mean it to hurt your feelings. But you must understand where he is coming from too. I am certain that he sees people (like the woman who had her surgery the same day, same doctor just before me...) who do not follow the rules and he wants you to know early on... FOLLOW his rules. This lady sat in the waiting room of his office, and said she had been eating orange sherbert ice cream and it went down just fine. She did not get sick. So he does not assume you know and follow his rules. He has to assume that you don't know the rules, and will drill them in early.
You will thank him for it later.... keep your head up!
First let me start by saying thank you for showing interest in my post. I completely understand making a person accountable for their choices, but this person has followed everything he has told me to the tee!! I have had nothing to eat other than chicken broth since two days before my surgery to today and as for drinking I have only had water. I feel if he "assumes" people aren't following the plan then he should ask instead of being so rude. I also know how his bed side manner is and that did not bother me when I chose him for my bypass. I also don't doubt that he would do anything for his patients when they need him. I just fell that he could be a little more tackful towards his patients when it comes to just being only one wek out of surgery. My post was to just to ask people if they felt 10 pounds was a possitive sign or not. If you think he is all that more power to you!
Hi Stacy, I am so sorry that thing have been so bad for you hon. I had mine last week too. I get my stitches out in the morning. They won't weight me til the next appt. that is what is on my sheet. Because of the swelling. I know that each Dr. is different. Maybe he had just got up on the wrong side of the bed. I am so sorry that you caught the tail end of the sheet. Take care and we love ya. You are in thoughts and prayers for speedy recovery...Hugs Barb

I am sorry if I offended you. That was not my intention at all. Please accept my apologies. My post was not meant with poor intentions, and I am very sorry that you had your feelings hurt. Sometimes it helps to know where someone is coming from or why they may appear cold, that's all I meant to do was give my observations of Dr. Houston. Again, my humblest apologies.
