back pain

Hi All!!  I've been having really bad pain in my middle back.  It feels like someone is stabbing me with a red hot knife then twisting it. (ok, who's got the voodoo doll!!!  ha ha)  It started the week before I went back to work.  About 4wks now I guess.  I've been to my PCP.  He said muscle spasms and gave me muscle relaxers.  They didn't help.  I started going to chiropractor and that's not helping either.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I was wondering if it could be from the WLS.  I know after losing weight your body has to adjust.  I don't know how much more of this I can take.  Sometimes the pain moves around to the front right under my ribs and it takes my breath.  If anyone has had this or knows something that might help, I'm all ears.  I don't know where else to go for help. Melissa, I am sorry that your back is hurting.  I don't have any ideas beyond what you are already doing.  Could the muscle be cramping?  I hope that you are able to find the source soon so you will be much for comfortable.  Let me know how you are doing.  Talk to you soon.. Tawnya

I experienced back pain when I had lost a substantial amount of weight.  The chiropractor stated that my back was getting adjusted to wear it had to now carry the weight, and it knocks your back out of whack.  But I didnt experience it early on.  I'm not sure what might be causing yours... doesn't sound like the same thing, unless you've already lost a lot on your pre surgery diet...?? Keep us posted, and I sure hope it gets better soon!  Back pains are awful!

Hi, my back hurt too after about 2 weeks, my surgeon told me it was just built up gas from where they blow it up inside you to separate the organs. Once I got rid of the excess gas in my shoulder blades and under my rib cage it went away.   I don't know what else to help you with.  Hopefully, it will go away whatever is causing the problem.  I'll keep you in my prayers. Morning Melissa!  Could it be that you are now moving around more?  I know I had severe pain at 3 to 4 weeks out, not in my back but all around!  At the January Lunch Bunch I could hardly move.  My Doc said it was because I was becoming more active>  Who knows!  Hopefully it will go away quickly.  Hope you feel better soon!

I know when I woke up form surgery my back was killing me but once weight started coming off it got better. Maybe you strained your back somehow. If it doesn't get better after taking pain meds you may want to get checked out by your doctor or a chiropractor (sp) Hope you feel better soon !

Have they checked, or do you still have, your gallbladder? When my gallbladder went bad, the most intense pain I had was right below my right shoulder blade in back. Kind of between the middle of my back and the shoulder blade but at that level. It was a sharp, stabbing pain that would take my breath. Pain would also hit up under my ribs on the right. I hope they find the cause of your pain and get it resolved.

Susan, you described my pain to a "T".  I do still have my gallbladder.  If it doesn't start easing up, I'm going back to my PCP and have him check it.  My chiropractor doesn't think it's in my back.  He's saying now he thinks it might be muscle spasms, too.  I go back to Dr. McDowell on the 14th, so if it's not any better I'll discuss it with him also.  Thanks so much for everything.  By the way, I saw your pictures.  You look great!!!  Hope to see ya next Tuesday and then on Saturday.  I took a vacation day on Friday so I would be sure to be off on Saturday.  Can't wait to see the people i know and meet the people I've  been chatting with here.  See ya soon

When I told my PCP of the shoulder blade pain, he immediately sent me for a gall bladder scan and then to a surgeon. Perhaps the description of "back pain" is throwing them off.  I would have thought muscle spasms would have responded to the muscle relaxers. But then I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV. I hope they find the cause and get it resolved. See ya Tuesday!

Have you talked to your surgeon or nurse about the pain instead of your PCP? Like Susan said, it could be something like your gallbladder and your PCP may not pick up on that like your weight loss clinic would. Hopefully it is not that severe since you are so close out from your surgery but I would be more inclined to go see my weight loss clinic for tests instead of the PCP. In fact, i went to my surgeons office for just about any pain or sickness I had for the first several months after my surgery. I just felt more comfortable there than at my PCPs.Good luck and I hope they figure out what the problem is soon.
