Fresh Fruit Craving

Ok, this question is for you veterans.  I am dying for fresh fruit.  To the point, I think I would knock down an old lady that had some in her hand (JK).  Can you ever eat fresh fruit again?  If so, when?  If so, which ones?  I'm sure most of you have a suggestion for a substitute, but it won't be the same for me since the craving is so strong.  I've been adding "fruity" SF additives to my water, but that is not helping the craving at all.  Thanks.

I did the same thing, but I talked with my surgeon and my Nut about it and they felt that it has to much natual sugar in them, however they also said that if i must have some to try some SF apple sauce, I know this isnt fresh fruit but it did work for a short time, after that I had a piece of a banana and well I also tried some dehydrated fruits but only a few didnt want to get sick or to many calories and there again that isn't fresh but its fruit lol.  You have to be careful when trying different fruits they might cause you to dump. Not telling you to eat the things I did just saying thats the things I tried. Talk with your surgeon and nut they will be able to help you with that and will also be able to tell you when you can have that sort of thing.  Wish I could help you more Hugs

Thanks.  I do have some SF applesauce at home and may have to give it a try tonight.  I'm scheduled to see the surgeon again on the 14th of March, so I will talk with them about it then.

If I were you I'd make a list of everything that is going on with you and all the questions you want to ask the Dr. I know I had all these questions in my head and when I went for my check up I forgot half of them and didn't remember until I got home go figure. Sometimes when we crave things it could mean we are lacking in something, doesn't mean we are but just bring it up to your surgeon never can be to safe right?

Hang in there. You will be able to have fresh fruit again just not now. The SF applesauce is a good option for now but go easy on it. Just a tablespoon or so to see how you tolerate it. The first fresh fruits I had were cantaloupe, strawberries and banana. I would have a bite or two and that would be it. I didn't add them until closer to 6 months out though and even then it was an occasional treat.  I have added very small amounts of fruit to my protein shakes from about 2 months out. By small amounts I mean 1 or 2 strawberries or 1/4 of a small banana. Right now my kick is Gala apples. I can eat 1/2 of a small one with some type of protein to help control the natural sugars. I can even tolerate the skin now. In the beginning I had to peel anything with a skin.

Thanks Susan.  I know it is all going to depend on what I can and can't tolerate too.  Right after I had surgery, I had to go the long way around in Wal-Mart to avoid the fresh fruit section.  They had oranges out and the smell was so overwhelming, I could just picture myself diving into the orange display head first.  Of course, all the really good fruits I love will be coming out soon and it will be torture for me.  What about tomatoes and cucumbers.  I love to eat them in the summer and sometimes, that is all I would have for dinner - along with a few other vegetables.  Again, I know it all in what I can and can't tolerate, but I do love my fresh fruits and vegetables.

Hi Wendy. Yes, you will be able to have fruit agian. Like everyone else said, just not now. I know I was in heaven when I found the walmart brand orange sunrise single packets that you add to your water bottle. That tasts just like OJ. It was really good. Crystal light has one too but I thought the walmart brand was actually better. Applesauce is a really good substitute too. You can also get the Yoplait light yogurts in different "fruit" brands. They have a good banana creme one. They also have strawberry and a mixed fruit. Have you tried any of these yogurts yet? Maybe they would help with the cravings? I don't think I ate fruit for at least 6 months after surgery and even then it was a slow process. But now, I eat lots of fruit with no problem (except I still peel apples and pears and etc.). Hang in there.

Thanks for the info Misty.  I have tried the CL Orange Sunrise and do like it.  I also find I loke the Wyler's SF Raspberry that you can make in 2 quart increments.  It has helped some this week.  As far as Yogurt is concerned, I had a problem with it a few weeks ago and wasn't able to eat it - it was all of a sudden entirely too sweet for me.  But I might try it again - maybe just a different brand.  It seems to me, the more some foods try to eliminate the sugar/carbs in a food, the more sweet the food becomes as a result of the manufacturer trying to make it taste good.  I never thought I'd see the day I would say something was too sweet.  My 6 month time frame will be in July and that will be the time there will be a lot of really good fresh fruit and vegetables.  I'm just praying I'll be able to tolerate the ones that I enjoyed in the past - just in smaller portions. Thanks for your ideas and suggestions.  I'm making my list for the doctor as I'm writing this because I do have questions and I don't want to forget them.
