Getting Scared...

So my surgery is set for Thursday and I am starting to get nervous.  I keep worrying that I could die during surgery.  I know that lap-band is outpatient and that death is not common.  It is a relatively safe procedure.  My surgeon has never lost a patient.  I have had 2 family members undergo the surgery and they both had speedy recoveries.  I'm healthy.  I have had surgery three times before and there were never any complications.  I know how I react to anesthesia.  Yet I'm still scared. Is this normal??  Were any of you worried about dying?  I don't remember being this nervous before surgery before.  But then again, I never really had much of a choice with the others.  This is something I have elected to do.  So maybe that's why I am scared. What did you do before surgery to put your mind at ease?

This may sound morbid, but I could not help myself, I actually wrote letters and placed them in a place, that I knew my husband would find addressed to my husband, son, best friend and a few others!! Since I could not sleep well the night before my surgery, I wrote them and it seemed to help me put some closure, just in case, I really did not feel like anything was going to happen, but it helped me.  I think I did this because I lost my father at the age of 18, 20 years ago next month, from a massive heart attack and I have always wanted to say a few things, but will never have that chance, so this was a way for me to let those that I loved the most, know exactly how much I loved them and they would have something to hold on to forever just in case!!!  I know maybe it was morbid, but I am grateful that I did not need them and they have since been destroyed, but at the time, it sure helped!!  I believe since this surgery is unlike most and is such a life altering procedure, it makes us worry more than other surgeries, even though we know we will be just fine, plus it seems like since this is WLS and not everyone is acceptable of this type of procedure, all of the "others" negative thoughts keep playing over and over in our heads. You will be just fine and yes it is normal, do what makes you feel better and put your own mind at ease!! My continued prayers will be with you!! Hi, I was TERRIFIED before my surgery!  I had a history of complications so I had some reason to be.  But, it went off without a hitch!!!  I did write letters to everyone, write a will and give strict instructions to my husband and sister about my wishes.  It made me feel better.  I also made sure someone waited with my husband during the surgery.  I think it is very normal to be scared.  I decided that I could die slowly, or morbid obesity, or I could at least try to do something about it.  I was so miserable with myself, I kept to my resolve and had the surgery and am thrilled that I did! Nerves are very normal. Just remember that you are in very capable hands. From the anesthesiologist to the nurses in recovery, you will be very well cared for. We'll be praying for you and looking for you to post from the loser's bench.

You are normal.  Turn your fear over to God and go on and enjoy your day.  Worry really won't change anything.

Hugs and Prayers being sent your way!
