Men Only Support Group...Pam @ Centennial

Hi Pam, I took this information from a prior post     "Centennial is starting a support group for men only - the first meeting is this Saturday at 10:00 AM at 2200 Murphy Avenue (Tace Building) Nashille. It is open to any male in the area pursuing surgery regardless of where they have their surgery or if they are preop. or postop " This is good information.  I have a colleague that I am anxious to pass this news on to.  Thank you for posting. I was also curious, and thought maybe I would ask you.  Having a support group for men only - would this be because they face different issues in weight loss than women or have you found that maybe men would be more willing to be open and ask more questions and discuss their concerns that affect them and be more comfortable and supportive in a men only support group?   As I pondered this I was thinking about all the support group meetings and WLS seminars that I have attended over the years and recalled in some of those meetings the ratio for men to women in attendance were about equal and their participation was about equal as well.  Of course you are always going to have different personalities in the room rather they be male or female that would dominate the topic of conversation but that would be any support group rather it be for WLS, Alcoholics Anonymous, the local book club at the library etc. etc.   Now I do know that speaking about me personally I am modest by nature.  Probably more so than the average, for instance in these same support groups that I am talking about, when the women ask a question about their physical appearances changing due to rapid weight loss such as sagging boobs or I used to be a size 48 EEE now I am a 32 B or due to rapid weight loss I have experienced an extreme hormonal change that affects my monthly you know what so is this common and can we talk about it,   I know at those times when we are all in the room together I start to feel uncomfortable.  So do men experience this as well? Of course I have been to meetings too where the women did out number the men 4 to 1.  Would men be more apt to attend if they knew there would only be men there? Pam, it is really good seeing you and thanks again for the information.

I'm so glad you posted this as I was going to send a reminder out anyway! Nationwide, about 80% of the patients who have weight loss surgery are women. At the seminars, a lot of time there's a pretty even distribution of men and women in the room, but many times it's the woman that's pursuing surgery. The idea of a group for men only has been mentioned a couple of times by some male patients. I am thinking for the same reasons as you described - they do have some issues and questions different from women and I think they would be more comfortable speaking up in a group of guys. Please feel free to tell anyone you think would be interested or benefit from attending.
