Well I spoke with Humana and Surgeons office this morning...The 6 month weight loss program is a definite...I thought I had several consecutive months at PCP but actually only had 2 so I have 4 to go...That is ok but I am currently at a 38 BMI and if I lose below 35 I am no longer a canidate for surgery...Insurance requires I maintain or lose in this 6 months, but I cant lose much or I am defeating the purpose...Dont get me wrong I would love to be able to do this on my own, but I know that even if i have a victory I ulimatetly gain back...This is going to be so hard...I am going to aim for 5 pounds a month..I really don't know what else to do.

HI Chrissy, I don't believe it's required that you loose so much that it causes your BMI to drop.  They basically want to see if you can do the program, by having you try and lose some.  Just do the best you can, plus it will help when you do have surgery, and goes towards your overall weight loss.   I had to lose 10% of my body weight for my surgery, but I couldn't get the full 10% lost.  It also helps to shrink a fatty liver.  All that is expected of you is to try, even if it's just one or two pounds a month for your weigh-in.  Anything over 30 BMI with comorbilities is still able to have surgery.  I can only keep you in my prayers, and just pray that all goes well for you to have the surgery.  We all know that being obese, that a person can't lose it on their own without major help.  The problems with health will still be there and the weight would go right back on, it's a vicious cycle.  Keep us posted.  always Kathy

Do they go by your starting BMI or your BMI at the end of the 6 month program? By my calculations you could lose about 12 pounds and still have a BMI of at least 35. If you only have 4 more months of the supervised program to go, just shoot for 2 lbs per month. That will have you showing a loss but keep your BMI from going too low. If they only require that you not gain, even better. Just keep your calories where they are now and maintain your current body weight. You can do this!

They will go by my BMI at the end of the six months...of which I have actually about 3.5 left ...I saw my PCP in November, and December...I should be ready to resubmit after my April Appt with my doc...I don't know why I am freaking out about losing too much because that certainly has not been the problem before!!!  I have been fat for years so I know that three or four months more will not kill me..I guess it is the principle of the matter...and even after I do this they may still may do something to deny me who knows...all I can do is hope for the best!!!
