I will be having my RNY surgery next Tuesday the 8th at Baptist and I can't wait!  I would like to ask all you nice folks for any advice from your vast knowledge and wisdom.  Is there anything specific that you think that I may need to take to the hospital or anything specific I need to do before I go to have surgery?  I also ask that you would please keep me and my family in your prayers this upcoming week, especially my 2 year old son who has never been away from his mother this length of time.  I am really more worried about him that I am myself.   Thank each one of you in advance for you advice/support and your prayers. Angela

Ooh, I love seeing all of these new January babies!  My advice for something to take to the hospital is a long handled, wooden spoon. This is to help you "reach" right after surgery. I wasn't having any trouble reaching before I had surgery but for about a week after, I was just too swollen and sore and the spoon made it easier. Just wrap the paper around the head of the spoon and slip it off after using it. Toss the spoon when you don't need it anymore. For your son, all I can recommend is extra cuddles before you go and maybe give him his own picture of you for him to hold onto while you are gone and someone to remind him how many "sleeps" until mommy comes home. Good luck!

P E A C E - It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

Congratulations, Angela! I'm so happy for you!  You have the most wonderful surgeon and you need not worry...you'll do just great!  I would reccommend that you take your own pillow.  It makes that hospital bed a bit more comfy.  Also, chapstick is a must have!  You won't believe how dry your lips will get. Do you want visitors?  We usually make the rounds at Baptist but feel free to say, "No Thanks!" Big supportive smile! Freddie

Good luck, Angela! Susan had some great advice.  Freddie is right too about the lip balm.  But make sure that you get some w/o alcohol in it...not blistex or carmex.  I had some that they gave me at the hospital and I can't remember what kind it was but they said that the alcohol in it could dry out your lips even more. If I still have some at home, I'll check what kind it is and post it. I really can't think of too much more to add.  It helped me bringing my favorite scented body wash to the hospital. Just be prepared to walk after surgery! This is to prevent blood clots in the leg.  Just to let you know, I couldn't sleep too well in the hospital bed post surgery, because I was terribly swollen and bloated post surgery.  For about 2 weeks.  Sleeping in a recliner worked best for me and at the end of the two weeks, I was able to sleep in a bed again.  Read my blog on the OH site, I remember detailing my recovery in my blog.  You and your family, including your son, are in my prayers.  See you on the other side of the losers bench!  Oh, BTW...be prepared to get sf, ff yogurt, cottage cheese, etc ., and don't get ISOPURE! Yuck, yuck, yuck! Try the Achieve One's or the World Wide protien drinks from the Vitamin Shoppe (also at GNC).  I like the chocolate and vanilla flavors best.    Best of luck to you!

Just found the lip balm...it's Aquaphor Healing Ointment for the lips.  If you don't find it at the drug store, don't worry.  The nurses station will probably give you some.
