Sick, Sick, Sick
Am I the only one who has had trouble getting in the protein AND water after surgery? My RNY was 11th, and since then I haven't had but about 40 grams of protein and maybe 3/4 of a bottle of water. Everything makes me sick to my stomach and goes straight thru me! I've talked to the doctor twice and he says everything sounds fine. The protein drinks are so incredibly nasty... I'm just having a hard time getting them down. Is this normal?? I feel scared to death!

It is normal. The smell of protein shakes made me sick in the beginning. It is very hard to get in all the water and protein at first. Are you waiting thirty-45 minutes before and after meals to drink water? If not try that, I know at first if I didn't wait everything went through me as well. Wish you all the best. Hang in there girl !! {{ Hugs}}
Stacy--
I have never hardly been able to tolerate the protein drinks..The water intake was hard too. This is what I did. I bought a few sippy cups and took lots of tiny sips of water...I carried one every where I went. It worked for me...gulps made me sick. I went to the vitamin shop...and bought some protein shooters. They are in different flavors and are very concentrated ...like liquid jello in big test tubes...but you get like 40 -80gms of protein in 30 cc or so....it got the protein in with the least trouble and quickly!
I did that for the first 2 months and gradually tried the other things. Also water color popsicles- sugar free made me feel better everytime I was sick.
Try those 3 simple things and see how you do... My surgery was 7/10/07 and I have lost 70 lbs. You can do it!!!!
I was sick for the first 6 weeks with no explanation...my MD told me it just happens sometimes...then...boom... was over it.
Good luck.... Feel free to PM me if you need more help!

Stacey:
Most people have to build up the the appropriate amount of protein. All of the advice given here is excellent. You really will make it to 80 grams a day and 64 ounces of water. Can you drink chicken broth? You know that counts towards your fluid intake. Maybe sip some of that. If you can't drink the jello shooters, then maybe try some protein pudding. Make it with Hood's Calorie Couintdown or Micelar Milk.
Most important though is to realize that you are perfectly normal. Keep sipping or maybe suck on some crushed ice...whatever you can tolerate. You are going to be a success!
Big smile!

Nope, you are not alone in that. everything was pretty nasty to me after surgery and I did not like protein shakes of any kind. Everyone is giving you great advise. Try chicken broth because that counts as liquid and sf posicles. Get different flavors of crystal light and sf koolaid and see if that will help you get your liquid in. That is really important to make sure you sip as much as you can all day long. There are some protein bullets that are like 3 oz but have like 42 grams of protein in them. You can drink half at one time and the other half later in the day. They come in different flavors and a lot of people like to try those since you can get so much protein and only have to suffer down 1.5 oz at a time. You can get those at the vitamin shope or online.
It just takes time. Hang in there and just do your best. If nothing else, make sure you are drinking drinking and drinking more. The fluid intake is really important right now. Good luck and I know you will find something that works for you.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! They have really helped and calmed me down. I was truly freaking out the first few days and got really, really scared over the weekend when I got so weak it was hard to hold my head up. I saw the dr yesterday and he's very concerned about the fluid intake. Today is just 7 dys post op and he told me to start eating yesterday to get in calories. I FINALLY got in THREE bottles of water yesterday! Yay!! I had that sick feeling to my stomach all day long - bloated and full feeling - because I never stopped drinking, it seemed. I feel better just knowing that getting the water in and eating a little bit (I had chicken noodle soup and very runny taters from KFC, the latter of which wasn't good, btw). I know i still have to get the protein in... and I'm like you - EVERY kind I have bought makes me sick to even smell. I'm talking my stomach churns when I open the lid. I guess I just have a very weak stomach. Someone told me to try Unjury. I think I'll do a seperate post to see if anyone has any opinions on that.
Anyway, I'm feeling better. Saw the dr 6 dys post op and am down 17 lbs. Thanks so much for the help and concern! You don't know how much it means!
*hugs* to all!
