Hey guys,

Just got off the phone with Beth.  They were able to do the surgery laprascopically.  Unfortunately, they were not able to do the RNY.  It seems as they started the surgery, they found that Melissa had abnormal amount of adhesions between her colon and intestines.  Therefore, the RNY was an acceptable solution.  They have proceeded in doing a DS  (duodenal switch) stage 1.  From what Beth says, it is very similar to the old fashion stomach stapling.  They are in turn presenting this to CIGNA as the first step of a two part operation.  When the second surgery will happen is up in the air right now.  At this point they can not do the full surgery because she is not prepped for it.  They mentioned a high risk of infection.   The Dr. says she will still be able to lose weight.

As WLS patients we educate and prepare ourselves for the surgery.    I’m sure Melissa did not plan for this, just as I have not.  My concern falls with my sister and her husband.  I would be remiss to say that this has not scared me,  because it has!!!!!

That’s all the information I have at the moment.  As soon as I here anything else, I will post.  Please keep her in your prayers!

Hate to hear the news, but like many surgeries they really can't see the whole pi****il they are in there. At least they were able to do some type, I hope she is going to be ok with this. We usually know what we want, but sometimes what we get is out of our hands. The doctors and God know's best and I am sure that they made the right decision for her situation. I just hope she is not dissapointed when she hears the news. The news about the infection is not a good thing to hear, hopefully they can get her on antibiotics and get a jump on this infection,if there is any. You have natural feelings about being sad, you are concerned for your sister, that is normal. And I am sure that in the back of your head you are thinking about yourself and next week, again that is normal. Please keep us posted and if there is anything at all that any of you need, just let us know. Keeping all of ya'll in our prayers. Cheryl

That in unfortunate. But I am happy to see that the Docs were on top of their game and knew it was too risky to proceed with the RNY. Sometimes, you just can not see the whole picture until you get in there. I am happy they were still able to do it lap though. Also, many people have the DS and still be just as successful and happy with it. So do not consider it negative. Just know that it was what was meant for her. Of course, I have never heard about having to do it in 2 surgeries. So, poor Melissa. I wish her a speedy and healthy recovery from all of this. Luckily she has a great family and support team around her. She will come through just fine.

Scott ~ I am SO sorry about Melissa's situation and know that it'****ting you (and Beth) particularly hard when your surgery is just next week.  But you and I both know WHO is in control! (Aren't you glad!?!) I will be praying for Melissa and I believe she will be fine (and happy) when all is said and done. It sounds like her Dr. was on top of things, and she has an incredible support system in place. Encourage her to let us know if she needs something, and we will be there! (And that goes for you, too, buddy!) Praying and believing! ~ Tara

Hey Scott: Just checking in to see if you have heard anything else.  Please give Melissa a big smile for me and tell her that we are sending lots of prayers up for her.  I don't know much about the duodenal switch but I'll bet that we will learn about it just like we did our RnYs. Kiss Beth and have her kiss you back!  I'll bet you both need a hug right now. If ya'll need anything...please call me. Freddie

What a great and caring brother you are.  I'm glad that the doctor did not jeopardize her health and proceed with the rny. I am sure she will be disappointed that the procedure couldn't be performed but at least she will be alive and well enough to complain about it. Maybe God decided that the rny wasn't what was best for her.Sometimes He has impecable timing huh?  I'm sure she will be happy with DS in the long run. She along with her family have my prayers.
