Hi Sheila.Unfortunatley, there are some people that you just can not educate about this surgery and them understand it. I do think people who have never been overweight or at least had a close family member be morbidly obese, would not understand the need of this surgery. However, the people taking a nutrition class should be open to understanding all aspect of nutrition. I would like to hope these people are not studying to be a nutritionist or in the medical field since they are not open to understanding the effects of poor nutirition and obesity and its treatments. Especially since a nutrition class should be based on a broad range of nutrition (which would apply to people overweight). All you can do is give them facts. I would not keep defending myslf or my choices to people who are not willing to learn or understand. It/they are not worth your burden. I am glad you are trying to educate them and hopefully you will get through to at least one of them. But don't let them upset you. There is just a big prejudice in America about obesity and this surgery and unfortunatley, I do not think it will get much better anytime soon.

Sheila,  I'm so glad you're doing this.  I agree, to use the stats and co morbidities in adressing this.  But also your personal testimony is key.  If it were me, I'd also come back with the question "is it unnautral to to be morbidly obese, to be depressed every day, to be shunned by society not only about what you look like but also due to your health?"  Just things to ponder.  If you need any help, just let me know, and maybe I can pull up some info.  I did a project relating to wls and the psychological effects for a psych research project and can probably forward you the list of resources if that would be helpful.  Good luck.   -Alyssa
