He has a huge problem with cokes, he does drink the diet ones, but I am not sure if he can give them u*****t.  If he has RNY can he still drink cokes?I'm happy for him. They actually recommend no carbonation for the rest of your life. I do know several RNYers who are able to drink carbonated beverages that they have allowed to go slightly flat. I'm not a cola drinker so I didn't really pay much attention to the rules regarding it.

Yeah my surgeon says you can have 3 oz every 3 months or so and his nurse says no way no more for ever. The carbonation stretches the pouch. (True FACT)

I have heard people say shake it up real good and you should be ok, but hey who wants to work so hard for something so limited and may even hurt you in the long run?

If I can stop drinking my Diet Sodas, anyone can!!!  I drank several sodas a day about six or more, so he can stop if he really wants this surgery!!!  You will support him and it will be a great support system, plus he can come on line and we can help him too!!!  Yall will be our other WLS couple, like Beth and Scott, they are also a great inspiration for couples and WLS!!! Tell him I am proud of him and he can do this!!! Shelia

My surgeon said none for a year, then as tolerated.  They give some folks gas so bad they don't want them.  It is more of a gas issue than a stretching issue, the pouch does stretch but very little.  I admit I drink my diet dr pepper every morning.  It is my coffee (crack) what ever you want to call it.  It does not bother me at all.  I did go two years before I drank one.  It really is a doctor to doctor call.  Each one has different protocol so I just suggest he follows his doctor. darlene

Morning cheryl,

We were buying 4-5 cases of diet soda a week.  When it became a problem with RJ, then we decided we needed to stop.  So, I agree with Sheila, if we can quit, anyone can.

Diet Soda is all I drunk before surgery and igave it up cold Turkey (but not until the day of surgery!). It was easier than I thought because after surgery, the last thing you will want is anything that could cause your stomach problems. And after recovering for about 6 weeks, you have already given up the soda and can stay off of it pretty easy. No, you really should not think about the possibility of having soda in the future although some surgeons will approve it. But I honestly think it is best just to give it up and not go back to it ever.

I've heard that we weren't supposed to have it and if we do, we have to have the sodas flat...which brings me to the question...what's the point?! Anyway, BS (before surgery) if I drank a coke...it had to be the regular one...I just didn't do or will ever do diet sodas.  So no more for me.  Diet cokes...YUCK!

Hey Cheryl, I got this from an email newsletter I get on a regular basis.  Thought you might find it interesting. Break the Soda Habit!

If you're used to drinking a can (or two or three) of regular soda a day, it can be hard to switch to water. But believe me, your body will thank you! Try these tips from fellow members for breaking the soda habit:

  • Don't keep an endless supply of soda in the fridge. Buy only enough to have one a day, and ration it out.
  • If you can't go cold turkey, switch to diet soda to help wean yourself. Diet drinks taste a lot better than they used to!
  • Replace soda with water or unsweetened iced tea for just a week — then have a can. You may be surprised to find you've lost the taste for it!
  • Stop drinking soda out of a can. Instead, fill a glass with ice, then add the soda. You'll drink less soda, and it will be easier to eventually wean yourself off it.
  • Calculate the calories. If you drink one soda a day for a year, that's 58,400 calories, or almost 17 pounds!
