Tell me why I should reschedule
As everyone else has mentioned, noone can make this decision but YOU, not us, not your wife. It would concern me that it sounds like she is setting you up to fail or isn't being very supportive.
I am self pay and have a lap band. It is a tool you have to work. It helps me to feel full after eating a small amount of food, but I can "eat around it". This is a lifestyle change and not a temporary diet. There are many great programs at the center, and it sounds like both you and your wife would benefit from going to them, especially any of Dr. Frye's sessions or programs. Just looks on the CMC website for dates and times. The Thurs and Fri are groups and the Monday night are more lecture type settings.
Hey Chevy! Brother, you are going through what a lot, not all, of us go through. My surgery is scheduled for 12/18 and I have had those same thoughts! We enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner just like everyone els. My thoughts were on food. How I will never be able to eat this type of food again....WRONG! I saw my wife enjoy Thanksgiving like she never has before. She ate a little of everything (very little), but walked away from the table feeling good! Me on the other hand, desserts were my downfall. But you know what, I am looking forward to the next time my family gets together. You see, my wife had RNY on 6/4/07, my sister is scheduled for 12/13/07, and I am scheduled for 12/18/07. That's 2 members of my family plus me, who are receiving a new lease on life. I know without this surgery none of us would make it. I know that sounds morbid, but truthful. But you see...I have a very dear and beautiful wife and a very handsome and smart son who might need me around a while longer! That's the why in my life!
You spoke of all the food and soft drinks you take in daily. Man, we were buying 4-5 cases of soda a week, now we are buying 2-3 cases of water a week. We still have the occasional soda, but nothing big! I know how you feel about being embarrassed about seeing friends you have not seen in a while. That's the reason I have never been to any of my high school reunions, this year would have been 30 years. But I did not go. You wrote as if you knew me! Guess what? You described what it feels like to be an obese person.
Brother, only you can make this decision. Only you can decide if it is worth it. Only you can take that first step to call Dr. Dyer's office. No one here on this board can make your decision. Only you!
There are several face to face support groups in the area. My suggestion is to attend one you feel comfortable with. The Centennial support group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. We have a few of us males who attend on a regular basis. We will not be meeting this month because of the holidays. But I urge you to attend!
If you need anything, give me a shout! You can send me a private message through OH! Good Luck Brother, and I hope to meet you soon!

Hey. I have been wondering what is going on with you. Eveybody has already said what you need to hear. It is yours and only your decision. And you have to be ready to commit to this surgery. You do not want to go through a major surgery and recover from it to not follow the recommendations of the surgeon. I know it is hard to think about "giving" up food. But from my experience, after surgery (although mine was RNY), you really will not want to eat that way agian. Yes, you have to be in it mentally but going through surgery does change your mindset. Also, you are not really giving up the bad food. You can eventually start introducing more food in moderation back i nyour diet but it will not be the the extent it is now.
Just remember, that you are doing this for your health so you can be around for your family for a long time to come and be in your best health for them. Even if you decide not to go through with the surgery, now you have researched enough about this surgery that maybe you can start making lifestyle changes for yourself and family.
I wish you all the best in your desicion. Just do not let fear control the decision. Use your faith.

Ok I know this is going to be so mean. But, if you want the garage, and gym equipt, buy it.
If you wanted this surgery like the rest of us did, you would hock your garage if you already had one and sell your gym equipt and your refrigerator, and anything else you have. We wanted it that bad... and we dont look back... but thats just my thought.
