How did you decide on your goal weight?

I'm just curious about how you came up with a weight loss goal.  As I have shared my goal with other members of my family, they seem to think that I am aiming too low.  My doctor doesn't set a goal for his patients. So...how did you do it?

Good Question. My doc did not set a goal either. I guess I really never set a goal at the begginning because I did not know what to expect. Once I realized how much weight I was losing I set a goal then (which was around maybe 6 months post-op). I set my goal just to get a "normal" BMI of 25 or 24.9 which was losing half of my weight. I never knew at the beginning that was even a possiblity so I never had that type of goal. I guess I just went with the flow at first. I am curious to know how others set their goal too.

Freddie,        I chose 10 lbs less than a normal BMI, because it gave me a litte room and with plastics, I hope to loose another 10-15 lbs of excess skin and that will place me between 125 and 130, because my goal is 140, normal BMI is 150!!!   Shelia

I set mine for a normal BMI, which for me is 141lbs. I hope to take off another 8 - 10 with plastics which would put me well within the normal range.  Also, after my daughter was born I lost a lot of weight. I actually got down to 125 lbs and found that was too low for me. I felt best between 130 and 135. So that's kind of what I'm shooting for now. Dr. Spaw has told me that, as far as he's concerned, I'm done. I have a normal BFI (body fat index) and have lost almost 93% of my excess body weight. I'm just so darned short that my normal BMI is very low.

Many thanks for the advice!  I have adjusted my goal to reflect 10 pounds above where I would really like to be but...after plastics...I should be exactly where I want to be. Again, thanks for the information.  It really helped. Freddie
