Wine

My surgery isn't scheduled until next month, but I'd like to know about alcohol and wine.  I'm not much of a drinker, but I do enjoy a glass of wine before dinner occasionally.  Can I still do that considering the fact that wine has sugar in it?  What about condiments...like catsup.  Doesn't catsup have sugar in it? Thanks Sue

with wine, you will need to worry more about the alcohol content than the sugar content. Alcohol affects a RNY patient very differently...it doesn't take much to get you tipsy! Most condiments have a very minimal sugar content. I think ketchup has something like 4 grams of sugar per serving.

Some people are more sensitive to sugars than others. If you find that you are in the category of people who have a problem with even the tiny amounts of sugars in stuff like catsup, there are very good sugar free catsup and salad dressings, etc. out there. Susan Maria carries the best tasting ones on her site bariatriceating.com. Like April said about wine, you will be a cheap drunk. It only takes a few sips for it to go straight to your head. Congratulations on your surgery date. Susan

Hi  Sue. Congrats on your upcoming surgery. Most condiments do not have enough sugar in them to matter with the exception of bar-b-que sauce. You really have to watch what kind of bar-b-que sauce you use. Ketchup and mustard really do not have any sugar in them and neither does mayo. Altho mayo is high in fat and caloreis so you should switch to lite.  As far as wine goes, it does have to much sugar in it to have right  after surgery. After you have recovered from surgery and are back to eating somewhat normal things, then you can try it. The problem is that it hits your system very fast so you can not tolerate as much. It is something you will just need to try in the comfort of your own home until you know how you will react to it.
