Uh, question on birth control...I know there's some malabsorption, but if a wls patient wanted to get on one, which one should they look into?

You really have to be careful because of the malabsorption.  Your surgeon will always tell you to use two forms (one for you and one for him). But you may want to check on the Pregnancy board for their recommendations. There have been several people who got pregnant on the pill because their bodies just did not take to it after surgery. I always took orthotricyclen (sp?) and I do not recall it having a  weight gain side effect which is something to consider when choosing too.

I have never had one, but I've heard good things about the Mirena IUD which is a device that is inserted into your uterus and removable any time you want. It can be done at your gyno's office. From what I understand, it keeps an egg from attaching to the uterine wall for implantation.

Alyssa,

I do not have to take BC any longer, but when I did, I took the Depo shot every 3 months and loved it, I would ask about it!!

My doctor, Larry Gurley at Baptist, reminded ME of the malabsorption and birth control and said there were 2... IUD and the patch.  I took the patch.  I like it but its kinda ugly and makes sticky stuff on my skin after peeling it off...  I have to rub it hard to get it all off.  Anyway, ask your gyn and if he/she acts like they dont know, ask your surgeon.  I did have one that you chew up, but the gyn said that it probably wasn't as effective as others on the market.
