Gout

Considering the fact that after surgery we must consume large quantities of protein in our diet, has this caused any bouts of gout for any of you.  I haven't had my surgery yet, but I'm starting to drink protein shakes to get used to them and now I've had such a bad attack of gout, I ended up in the emergency room in a wheel chair. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. Sue

First off, BLESS YOUR HEART! That is sooo painful! I don't have Gout, but my son does. We ended up in the ER 2 times just like you. He was just miserable! Throughout much of that history, gout was considered the “disease of kings,” primarily because it was thought to be a result of overindulgence of fatty foods and alcohol. He takes cherry pills... a friend told me about them, and I think they really help. We couldn't find them at GNC, had to go to another Health Food store, and found them. I found one of those foot baths, and he soaks his toe in that. And rest. Rest makes it feel better. He also takes Allopurinol. It decreases the production of uric acid in the body. My son loves pepperoni on pizza sooo much!  A BIG NONO!

Johns Hopkins lists foods which are higher in purines

Foods very high in purines include:

  • hearts
  • herring
  • mussels
  • yeast
  • smelt
  • sardines
  • sweetbreads

Foods moderately high in purines include:

  • anchovies
  • grouse
  • mutton
  • veal
  • bacon
  • liver
  • salmon
  • turkey
  • kidneys
  • partridge
  • trout
  • goose
  • haddock
  • pheasant
  • scallops

So, losing weight will help Gout. Avoid deli meats and pepperoni! He doesn't eat fish, but he really wants to try it soon. J is doing so much better now. He has not had WLS, BUT he has lost 10 pounds from changing his diet. He is overweight. Eat chicken!  That's my son's main meat now. He gripes, but he does not want his toe to throb any more. Your high protein shakes should be a GOOD thing, I would tend to think. I hope this helps. Anyone else have insite?
