So I got released Thursday afternoon and basically had leftover hospital food for dinner and then just sipping water.  I have some shakes and things from before surgery to use.  Plus of course my book that suggests all kinds of pureed foods to eat on this 8 week stage.  But I would like to know from all of you what were your staples?  What did you eat most and what agreed best with you, also what did not agree with you? Furthermore I had surgery monday and it's friday now, only burping and passing gas up to this point... when should I worry about my first bowel movement and what I can do to get that going?  Thanks!

The BM won't start until you've put some food into your system.  My staples in the beginning were: my shakes, of course yogurt - carbmaster refried beans & cheese cottage cheese pureed Chunky soups - these tasted like adult food. I would add a small amount of unflavored protein powder to up the protein. AnyWhey is a good unflavored that stands up in warm liquids. chicken broth beef broth pureed chicken salad - I used celery seed, onion powder & pickle juice instead of the chopped stuff; LF mayo; and a bit of mustard pimiento cheese protein pudding from The Vitamin Shoppe SF popsicles warm tea SF egg custard from Susan Maria's book I tried baby food, blech! Some things that didn't work for me: scrambled egg ricotta cheese Boost - I brought this home from the hospital and thought it was gross plain water - it had a nasty taste to me coffee - tasted bad for about the first month

Hi Lisa! Welcome back!  When I got home I ate  1.  cottage cheese,  2.  Part-skim ricotta (mixed with a little vanilla extract and a drop or two of almond extract & a packet of Splenda--it tastes like the inside of a canolli!)  3.  Fat free refried beans with some lowfat cheddar cheese and lowfat sour cream 4.  Susan Maria's egg custard (this is fabulous if you like custard! and it goes down really easy.) 5.  Hard boiled egg mixed with a little lowfat mayo and some olive juice (tastes like a deviled egg) 6.  Turkey chili (pureed in the food processor) 7.  Mozzerella cheese melted in some ricotta cheese with italian seasoning and then covered with spaghetti sauce (like lasagna without the noodles.) 8.  Sugar free banana popcicles (These are a favorite!) 9.  The turkey and gravy section from a Lean Cuisine meal (pureed in the food processor.) 10.  A chicken leg (pureed with a little broth) 11.  AchievOne protein lattes 12.  Every morning I play mixologist with my cup of decaf.  Usually I use about 12 oz. decaf, 13 ice cubes, 1 Tablespoon sugar free hazlenut creamer (International Delights), 1  Tablespoon DaVinci sugar free chocolate sauce and 1 or 2  Tablespoon(s) of sugar free syrup (I love to play with the different flavors!) 13.  I also made the protein pudding in Dr. Spaw's booklet.  It is delicious made with cheesecake pudding!

So far...that is about the extent of my menu.  I have also experimented with some hot sauces and jalapenos.  No problem but I wouldnt recommend it unless you have always loved hot stuff, Good luck! Freddie

Once you start getting some protein in your energy level will be much better.  Some of my earlier items  Chicken or Tuna salad, made with relish, chopped egg and lowfat mayo.  (This is a good starter item) Yogurt -- be careful to watch the carbs until you know how you'll tolerate it. Achieve Ones are a quick way to get a substantial amount of protein. Refried Beans with cheese (Taco Bell) Sugar free pudding

Cottage Cheese

I did the "no noddle" verision lasagna   (really helped with italian craving) ground turkey, ricotta and spagetti sauce Wendy's Chili Rotiesirre Chicken from the grocery store -- good flavor -- easy to puree scrambled eggs

I think everyone has covered the food pretty well, my staples were cottage cheese, fat free refried beans, and the bullets.  But I wanted to tell you what I was told regarding bowel movements.  I was told that I may not have a movement for a full week after I came home, up to two weeks after surgery.  According to my advice, our bowels are basically asleep and it takes a little while to wake them up...hence why some of us have constipation soon after surgery...but Milk of Magnesia works well for most people.  Good luck and so glad you are home!!!
