Concerns about my insulin pump and being able to maintain connection during surgery and throughout Hospital stay.
o Medtronic’s protocol for insulin pump patients is to remain connected during surgery. This is what I prefer, because often, hospital caregivers have a passing knowledge of pumps and how they function. I handle this machine hourly; it would be in my best interest to continue my maintenance. The machine is programmed to maintain my blood glucose at a steady 100mg/dl. It supplies my basal insulin. I will provide my own pump supplies and insulin while in Memorial. I will, however, need the carbohydrate and fiber count for the Carnation Instant Breakfast as well as any other food I may be served.
I understand that a device for pain will be implanted in me, how does this work and how is it removed? Are there any alternatives?
o Anything that can be done to reduce any additional wounds due to this surgery will be helpful. Less chances of not healing and slow healing are concerns I have.
What will I be hooked up to upon recovery and being released?
o I have heard several different stories; I would like to know the reality.
What is the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and how functioning will I be in this unit?
o I am hoping that the name is just big and scary.
I would prefer having the ability of using vitamin B shots.
o I have used these in the past and they were very successful. I have years of experience giving myself injections.
