I know this is a silly question but do you eat Fruit? I am 11 months post-op and I recently started eating apples and pears. But wanted to know if it is ok to eat fruit like strawberries, oranges and watermelon. I know we can not have 100% oj because of the sugar content and fruit has a lot of sugar in it. Are we able to eat any high sugar fruit like that?

Misty, I eat fruit sparingly..At my year appoint with NUT she said fruit and veggies are good carbs but to make sure that 70 percent of your meals are protein then you can eat carbs. I try to make sure any carbs I eat are "good" carbs such as fruit or veggies. Hope this helps.

Yes, I have it sparingly though lately I have been on a fruit and veggie kick these past few weeks. I just got tired of always eating meat ya know. Tropicana makes a 50% less sugar OJ. I never have more than 1/2 cup when I drink OJ. I've had a carton in the fridge for about 3 weeks and still drinking on it.... usually a couple of drinks satisfies me :-) Bananas tend to make me dump a little (racing heartbeat) so I don't eat them as much.

Hi Misty, I eat fruit and just had a ham and chicken salad.  At three months I was able to eat green grapes, Dr. says they had to be pealed, but it was his nut. at the hospital that was sending the grapes on my tray. The peelings didn't bother me. I can digest the red seedless ones unless peeled and I'm not going to sit and try and peel a handful of red grapes. As for apples, I would love to just bite into one, but the dentures can't, so I have to peel them, core and cut them into small bites. I eat  a lot of bananas because they are high in potassium and don't bother me a bit. I haven't tried pears but once. Of course it had to be peeled, cored, and cut up. That takes all the joy out of eating a fresh piece of fruit. Peaches and plums I haven't tried.  I pretty much stick to smalls chef salads, green grapes, and bananas.  I eat the salads as much as possible because of my bowels, but eating oatmeal cookies a lot the last few days has really helped make things happen. I wouldn't suggest making a habit of eating fruits every day unless it's after you have eaten your dinner and then maybe just a bite or two.  I enjoy Gerber's dutch apple dessert instead of adult applesauce.  I would rather drink Gerber apple juice over adult's. Easier on the stomach and if a baby can have it then we can. Basically we are all babies learning to eat all over again. Love ya, The  Kat

Annerenee, since you haven't been out that long, before starting any new foods at this early stage, always check with Angie or Dr. Colquitt's office first. Right about now you should still be on bland to soft foods, meaning no treats like cookies.  Your body is still adjusting from surgery, and you can do more harm pushing yourself to eat foods that you shouldn't have until you have been out farther. Most of us couldn't even have breads until after 6 months.  Let alone cookies.  You also should only be eating 3 meals a day, Dr. Colquitt doesn't go with the 6 meals a day thing.  Between meals is when you are drinking your water, protein, but no food except for the three meals a day.  None in between meals as that is referred to snacking and not allowed.  Check with the Dr. and with Angie.  That's the best source of  information to be on the safe side.  Right now you can eat refried beans with a little bit of cheese that's 2 sources of protein right there.  Cottage cheese is another, yet they are soft foods and allowed.  Always keep refried beans in the cabinet to fall back on.  Love ya,  the   Kat

Misty, Just be aware the fruit has natural sugars and can cause dumping.  Eating it sparingly would be okay.  Just not everyday.  I am ready for the homegrown watermelons. Darlene

Hi Misty, Yes, very little, but yes.  I sometimes will drop a frozen piece of fruit into my protein smoothies (banana, berrys, peach).  And I have sliced very thin apples with no peel and put cinn bliss on it and nuked for something special.  I do not do fruits daily.  But I have purchased the cubed watermelon at publix and I will eat one chunk a day.  This hasnt bothered me, but it depends on your tolerance.  Oh and be sure to get seedless.  I have dumped on pineapple! Hugz! Paula
