I'm depressed, disapointed &
down BUT I'm not out, I got a denial from Cigna today . 2 reasons #1 my BMI is not high enough (mine 52.3) they won't cover it(DS) unless it's 60+. Mine was 57 before the 6 month Dr. supervised diet. #2 My PCP's chart notes for my 6 month diet is too hard to read!!!!! DUH.....it's a doctors handwriting. This i can get fixed easily. The surgeons office said they have a form that they can send me to have someone in my dr. office to put my chart notes on. So I guess all I need to do now it GAIN 48 lbs. to bring my BMI up to 60.04. I can't belive I'm going to have to do that. The nurse said "you could do the RNY/GB". But I don't think I can live with that WLS. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the RNY. It is just not my choice, my choice is the DS . Thanks for listening to me.

Are you going for lapband? I cannot believe they want you to have a 60 bmi!!! Most insurance companies do it at 40. Or 35 with 3 comorbidities... perhaps you should do some more research on the RNY and then make a decision... have you sat down and talked with some people who have had the rny?
I agree... the doctor's documentation can easily be fixed... he can dictate a report from his notes, he could also write a letter stating facts over the past 6 mos, etc etc.
Keep us posted, and good luck. I know it is very disheartening. Most people get so fed up with their insurance that they give up or pay for it out of their pockets... but honey that is exactly what your insurance hopes you will do. That's why they make it so hard. They do not want to pay for it! But you don't give up.... and by all means, don't gain a bunch of weight so you can increase your bmi! That would be very detrimental to your health!
Wow Susan, that is a little extreme... them requiring a BMI of 60.
You have worked so hard to lose the weight you've lost... are you sure you want to gain it back?? If you don't mind my asking, why couldn't you live with the gastric bypass? Isn't the DS a little more extreme than the RNY? I had the RNY and couldn't be happier with my results from it. I've lost 170lbs in a year. But to each his own
Well, I was just curious.

Hi Susan, I'm curious why you can't live with the RNY? I had mine done 16 months ago yesterday. I love it, have lost 179 lbs and that's with fighting a rare form of Leukemia. I know my DR. refuses to do the DS procedure. You loose all your nutrion with the DS procedure as it goes straight to the bowels. I would do more research before making your final decision. Best of luck, Kathy
