Hi, I'm new to the site. I had Ileo Gastric Bypass back in 1979 (age 16) and had to have it reversed. Has anyone else had a experience like that? I'm scared to even consider trying surgery again.

Hi Kay. Welcome to the board. No, I have not even heard of that form of gastric bypass. I would recommend attending a seminar (or two or three) at local hospitals so you can learn about the way it is done now. I can only assume that they have come a long way since 1979 with the procedure. Only you (and your Dr) can determine if the surgery is right for you (agian). You will even learn about the lap band surgery which is a little less envasive. I will say that we were all excited but scared about having the surgery. It wouldn't be normal to be a little scared because it is major life changing event in your life. I wish you luck with whatever choice you make and keep us updated on how you are doing and if you have any questions we can give our "expertise" too. Misty

Hello Kay. I have never heard of that kind either.. but I bet if you do some research on the internet, it will provide a bit more info if you want to know over the weekend... I would be very interested in knowing the outcome also... keep us informed... I only know that they used to do one called "stomach stapling" and a lot of people did have it reversed. Hopefully the procedure you had done did not do permanent damage, and you will be a candidate for surgery now. Good luck... let us know! MISTY... good to see you. Carolyn Craig has been worried about you for a few days... glad to see you back.

I've read a little bit about the procedure you named and found that most of the problems associated with it were caused by the "blind limb" that allowed an overgrowth of bacteria. Today's procedures don't have that blind limb. They are much improved and much safer. Also, I'm sure your procedure in 1979 was performed as an "open" surgery. Most of today's procedures are performed laproscopically. If they do have to do an open procedure, they have much better pain control techniques than they did in the 70s. Do your research. Go to as many seminars as you need to to find the surgeon you feel comfortable with. And, remain active on this board and ask as many questions, voice as many fears, announce as many victories as you want to. Good luck! Susan
