Hello All!!!had a bright idea
Hello everyone, yes it has been awhile. I have had my special needs daughter back and forth to the surgeon for her feeding tube leaking issue(like 25 times now) And yet it is still leaking UGHHH!!!! I had to make yet another appointment with the surgeon (and yes I have changed doctors now 3 times) We saw him, and her tube stopped leaking for a grand total of 2 days!! WOW!!!........ so I called the nurse back and she was like, " But the doctor said it should not be leaking anymore". It took everything within me not to reply..."" Well you see, I actually have no life and nothing to do during the day, so I thought I would bother your office ONCE again, just saying my daughters feeding tube is leaking, just for something to do!!"....LOL But I was nice. *mumbles under my breath*
As for me, my legs continue to have at last check my doctor thought about 75 pounds of fluid in them, oh joy. ( yes am on 2 different fluid pills, ask my poor toilet!..lol) Still have a wound on my right leg. found out my son has to stay in Iraq for another year.
But other then that, have been doing alot of praying and reading and had a thought.
I know on here there was a part that said obese people are covered under the American with Disabilities Act Public Law 101-336 ( have had muchhhhhh practice with the ADA and school for my daughter) So I did more reading regarding this act. I discovered that the office for Civil Rights is a part of this public law, and section 504 of the ADA.
So I thought why not write them and request their help. That if severly obese people fall under the ADA, how then can an insurance company and or employer have a medically needed weight loss surgery as an excluded item? And told them yes I comprehend that their office is involved with many issues regarding the ADA, But that WLS is an issue that can be life or death to many people. As the longer the issue remains unresolved, the more medical issues arise, thus causing a persons life span to be decreased greatly. And that I would appreciate any and all help they may offer in this area.
Sooooo what does everyone think?? Please offer me your feed back. As I said, it was just a thought , and also helps me from going crazy in dealing with insurance companies that are dee da dee's!!!!
*hugs*

It's good to hear from you. It sounds like your life hasn't gotten any easier though.
Your plan makes sense to me. If someone is confined to their home, or a wheelchair, unable to work, unable to take care of themselves, or their family, or any number of everyday activities because of their weight. Why do we have to beg and plead to get insurance companies to see that this is not "elective" or "cosmetic" surgery? This surgery saved my life!!! And, it has sure cut down on what the insurance company is having to pay out in medical claims on me.
Go for it Alice!
Check in when you can and give your daughter a kiss for us. You know your son is in our prayers, everyday!

Hi Alice. Welcome back to the board. I am sorry to hear what you are dealing with from your daughters Drs. Sometimes they just do not understand do they! I hope they get it straightened out.
As far as the ADA letter, go for it. What could it hurt. I never understand how a company can have it excluded even if it is medically necessary. That never made sense to me but I guess that is their choice. What are they going to want to exclude next.... pregnancy? You know I checked and my insurance spent more money on me the year before my surgery than they did for my actual surgery (and that was just one year). Had they not approved my surgery, they would still be spending that amount, plus some, every year. This surgery really does help with health related issues and you would think the insurance companies would be jumping at the idea to pay for a one time surgery to help out health issues as opposed to continue to pay for treating medical issues that will more than liekly not get any better by itself.
Try to get on and let us know how you are doing sometimes.

Hello Alice,
Sounds like your plate is pretty full with all the issues at home. I just wanted to say that I think your idea is a very valid one. I worked in education for years and section 504 offers many people opportunities to have accomodations in a great number of areas. I think that morbidly obese people should qualify for help just the same if not more than some of the others that my tax dollars help to support. I know of several parents who worked hard to get their children "labeled" so they can get financial support for those disabilities as well as getting modifications so their children would have an opportunity to learn or be successful in a manner appropriate for their disability. I know none of us wants a "label" but we don't need one as ours is out there for the whole world to see. Life is hard enough without having barriers, so I suggest you pursue the idea. Good luck! Kathy
