Here's an article on why protein is important:
Protein is the most plentiful substance in the human body, second
only to water. It is estimated that over 50% of the dry weight of
your body is protein. Protein is needed for many body functions on
the large and cellular level. It is found in and is a major source
of building materials for muscles, bone, brain cells, blood, skin,
hair, nails and internal organs. It is needed for the formation of
hormones which control bodily functions such as growth and metabolic
rate. Constant processes of repair and renewal takes place inside
our bodies with the aid of protein. When we ingest protein the body
breaks the longer protein units into smaller pieces called amino
acids. Our bodies can not manufacture these and thus protein
restriction will have its consequences, such as muscle breakdown,
hair loss, poor healing, depressed immune system, weakness and
fatigue. Protein cannot be stored, therefore it must be replenished
everyday.
There is a limit to how much protein the body can assimilate (process
and use) into muscle at one time. Generally speaking the body will
not be able to convert more than 30 grams of protein at a time into
muscle, and can accommodate a meal every two to three hours. Above
the 30 gram level, the body breaks down the protein and uses some for
energy and wastes the rest.
