Rash around incisions?

I red itchy bumps all around my incisions. The incisions themselves don't look infected, but I'm not sure what is going on. The bumps are raised and are similar to poison ivy (I haven't been in the yard, so I know it's not). I'm going to wait and call the doctors office tomorrow, but I think I remember them saying he was out of town this week. Has anyone else had something similar? I know my doc said that if anything unusual happened to get to the hospital... I don't think this is an emergency and I hate to go to the ER. The itching is about to drive me NUTS!!! I want to scratch!!! Help!

You may be having a bit of a reaction to the adhesive on the bandages. I know I always get a red welt in the exact shape of the bandaid whenever they draw blood. I don't have a latex allergy or anything, I just react to something in the adhesive. I got itchy, red bumps around my incisions too. But, like I said, it was a reaction to the bandages. Put some Neosporin with pain reliever on the skin, not on the incision itself. That should help with the itching. I used cold compresses too.

Okay, I think I have some polysporin in the cabinet. I'm willing to try just about anything. I thought it might be a reaction to the adhesive, but I'm over 10 days out. I figured it would have shown up before now.

I actually had this for about a month after surgery, then one day it just cleared up on it's own...

Yeah I had the same thing and Susan is right it was a reaction to the adhesive from the tape they used. I am almost 10 weeks out and it just finally cleared up about two weeks ago. I of course would still ask the Dr. just to be on the safe side, but maybe this will put your mind at ease. Nicole

H Kristen, I am very sensitive to all bandage tapings. I put a sanitary pad over the incision and the sticky side to my underware. Bingo it works better. I did this with 4 breast biopies, when I had the gastric bypass, and the removel of my gallbladder. You can also use Benedryl cream on the rash or blisters to stop the itching. I am so allergic to it, that within 3 hours I am covered in blisters. The paper tape leaves a huge red mark when taken off. I can only tolerate the cloth or self adhesive tape. The cloth one has to be removed within 2 hours, an hour to allow the skin to dry, then replace it for another 2 hours. you can bet I will be having plenty of pads available after next Friday when I have my tummy tuck. I'll be wearing a drain tube for several weeks, so the extra long overnight Stayfrees will be close by for a long while. When I was in Boot Camp, we used sanitary pads to put the pasty wax on the floors in the barracks, I always keep them on hand. You can try this, but also let your Dr. know about the ichy rash. Always, Kathy

Hi Kristen. You should definantely call your Dr just to let him know but I tend to agree that it is probably a reaction to the adhesive - especially after 10 days. Just make sure you do not get any red streaks going from your incisions that could be a sign of infection. And Stop itching! . lol. Easier said than done - I know! I hope it gets better soon for you. It is becoming fairly normal for people to be sensitive to adhesive. I warned the DR, nurses and everyone that touched me. BUT...... I still got burns, some so bad it left scars worse than insision scars. Be careful with them. Remove the tape as soon as possible if they start to itch or burn. Prescription meds work best if you can convey this to your Dr. Remember to tell all your Physicians about this. Bandaids and tape.
