Coffee

Has anyone gave up coffee? I have been so tired lately that I broke down and got a half a cup yesterday morning. I know my doctor and his nurse said caffine wasn't a good idea. Although I'm still confused as to why.

One of my pre-op questions for Dr. Spaw was if I had to give up coffee. He told me I could still have it just to make sure I take my Pepcid. I probably drink more of it than I should...that's why I get "the look" from Pam when the subject of coffee comes up...but I love my coffee. They even brought me coffee in the hospital following my surgery. It was probably decaf, it was so nasty that I couldn't drink it and I was afraid I had lost my taste for coffee. It took a couple of months before my tastes changed again and coffee tasted good to me. I wouldn't worry about having a reasonable amount of coffee. Just make sure you take whatever antacid Dr. Spaw has you on.

I never drank coffee before surgery but I drink it now. I think, like Susan said, you just have to remember your Pepcid. Also, you can't count caffeinated coffee towards your fluid intake. Janie

The thing about coffee is that it is rather acidic so it can cause some discomfort for some post-op pouches. Also, the caffine is a diuretic so you can end up dehydrated if you drink too much and don't up your water intake to compensate. If you can tolorate decaf, and make sure to drink it with a water chaser, I don't think it'll be too bad. And contrary to popular belief, decaf coffee does have a considerable amount of caffine in it, just not as much as regular. The other thing that keeps coffee off a lot of post-op lists is that people tend to add sweetener and creamers to it or have latte's or other "speciality" type coffee drinks. These have a lot of calories and no nutritional value.

I never drank coffee before surgery either... but I have compensated not being able to have my mocha frappuccinos from Starbucks... and now get a decaf every once in awhile... I tried the regular but it was really strong! I don't think I like starbucks regular coffee, even though I try to doctor it up... but I would rather have a decafeinated coffee in a flavor (like the one we got at that market Saturday, Toni but it wasn't decaf) ramlbing rambling. I'm so tired tonight! My fingers keep typing the wrong words!
