Hello all. I had the gastric bypass Monday the 19th of February 2007. I am 4 days out and already have major questions. Dr. Houston did not let me leave the hospital until Thursday because I had problems with my fever, blood count and ability to get up and move around. Now that I am home I feel a little queasy! Is that normal? Should I contact Dr. Houston? Should I have some medicine to take? I'm not hungry, I feel full all the time. It is hard to drink when I always feel full. Is this normal? Also, the protein drinks...does anyone know of a way to make this not so horrible to drink? Please help. Thank you!

Yes, it is very normal to feel queasy.... you just had your insides rearranged. If you continue to feel queasy or start vommitting/dry-heaving are are unable to keep anything down.. call Dr. Houston. You won't feel hungry for a long time. Take small sips..about 1 oz. every 10 minutes. Also, sugar free popsicles, jello, decaf tea, sugar free koolaide, and broth count towards your liquids. So many people end up back in the hospital for dehydration. And from what I hear, it is no fun. I know the protein drinks are horrendous, but they're your only source of nutrition. Protein is essential to body function. You can try to water them down or put lots of ice in them. I don't know what kinds are required now but the ones I had were fruity horrible concoctions. Things will get better. You may not be able to see it now, but it is definitely worth it in the long run! Good luck! April

I am 4 weeks out tomorrow and I fight nausea on a daily basis (sorry for the bad news), but for some I hear it is worse, unfortunately I am having a hard time with it, but have managed to stay hydrated, that's the key. My doctor prescribed Zofran and it has really helped, the only thing is, it is very expensive and insurance sometimes does not cover it. (I was lucky and my insurance did). I also drink Isopure drinks, they are 20 ounces and 40 grams of protein. I have also discovered if I mix the unflavored whey protein (70 calories and 17 grams of protein per scoop, I use one scoop per 20 oz) with the Wyler's sugar free drink mixes (like Crystal light) it is not too bad it does not have a flavor, but it does give it a creamy taste. (Orange is not too bad, because it taste like Orange cream) These are some tricks that I have found that help maybe they can help you.
